Have any of you ever actually had an LSD flashback? 1

This is the #1 side-effect people say happens when you take LSD, and yet being deeply ingrained in the LSD-using community i've found that it's entirely unheard of in terms of being something that actually happens. We all know it doesn't stay in your spine, but some people say a bad trip can cause PTSD which would cause flashbacks.
So what i'm asking all of you, is to answer this poll in honesty as to whether or not you've ever had the experience of sitting around sober and suddenly feeling as if you were propelled into the peak of a psychedelic trip for no apparent reason. I'm not asking if you've gotten HPPD, i'm wondering if you've had an actual flashback. If so, please write about your experience in this thread.

Not really - sometimes I look at something and I notice how trippy it really looks, it's more like I appreciate it's aesthetics more, hardly anything that actually snaps me out of reality. LSD changed me but nothing like what "lsd flashbacks" imply, if anything I'm more aware, and I function better than me before I took psychs.

I cant say for sure I have or not. There have been moments where I would feel like I'm high for seconds but that could probably happen with someone who doesn't take psychs. Maybe its certain endorphins or something that is released at random moments.

I've used acid in the hundreds of times range, and have never had a flashback. Never had HPPD before either.
While on acid, I might have flashbacks to negative experiences. A few months ago while tripping, thought my apartment was burning down, as that happened to me a year prior. It was like a repressed memory that played out while I was tripping. First time I've had anything I'd describe as PTSD, and it only lasted a minute. For that minute I was completely absorbed in that memory though. Felt the heat and saw the orange tint of fire and my heart started racing.
But while sober, I've never had anything like that, no. No acid flashbacks or anything. Honestly think they are a myth, but I don't really argue the assertion because other people's experiences might be drastically different.
I have noticed that friends who might have talked about flashbacks are typically people I've known that were also diagnosed schizophrenics though. I know that people with schizophrenia have different neuronal networks, and maybe that affects them differently.

No. Although after taking very large doses of mushrooms I may have mild tracers or see mild distortions in the following week or two. Pretty rare tho. Marijuana tends to bring it out.

LSD flashbacks are a myth. When you hear someone propounding one of these psychedelic urban legends, its a very clear sign they have never done LSD, or one of the cousin chemicals they pass off as LSD. Or just don't have much experience with psychedlic substances all together. my 2 cents.

I should've read before I voted. I don't think I would call my experiences flashbacks, no. I get white noise, tracers, and breathing/shifting textures all the time. Been that way for like a year. I think what people usually mean when they say they got an acid flashback was that they see walls breathing, grass shifting/growing, etc. I get that all the time. But I've never felt just as if I were going back into a trip I previously had. Acid has an intense body high/load which I've never gotten while not on acid

I've eaten acid many hundreds of times and not once had a "flashback"
Furthermore how the FUCK does anyone know what is a "flashback" and not just... vertigo.. inner ear problems... chemical imbalance.. nutritional issue.. psychotic episode.. or any number of a thousand different potential issues. Oh man I woke up the other day and saw trails everywhere and the walls were breathing. So the fuck what? Same things happened to me when I was a kid well before I ever ate acid. I think flashbacks are a myth. I abused the FUCK out of acid and never had a flashback.

"the experience of sitting around sober and suddenly feeling as if you were propelled into the peak of a psychedelic trip for no apparent reason".
This I've never heard. Usually it happens all of a sudden but it's never a full blown trip. You may see tracers or have auditory distortions. It usually passes within a few minutes and is quite enjoyable. But i haven't had one in about 30 years (they just stopped).

When i was younger I thought I was getting lots of flashbacks but I don't now in any sense and I attribute that to being psychogenic or placebo as opposed to neurologic. I wanted the flashbacks so they happened, kind of.

No way.......and you know how much LSD I poured into mouth over the years. Now when I was tour kid & eating massive doses once or twice a week I had HPPD, and that lasted for a while. Though I was doing so many other drugs as well.... But that went away. I have a buddy that flipped the fuck out one night, and he did get PTSD from that.....years later he still hasn't fully over come it. He has made great strides though. He didn't flashbacks per se, but he did have night terrors, extreme anxiety, and questioned reality for a while.

In the sense of neuroplasticity, flashbacks are definitely real, but in the traditional understanding of the event I'd say it's impossible unless you've got something wrong with your brain. I definitely get some distortions at times even when sober, especially if I look for it, but again, neuroplasticity.. so really I guess the answer to the question of it's existence depends on your point of view. Mine is a hard "No".

I have HPPD. I have constant patterning and flowing on surfaces, but not to an extreme degree. It's rather nice at times. Other times I wish I could see things "normally" even just once in a while. Sometimes I get brief flashes of the psychedelic mindset and/or mindfuck.
However, I've never gone more than two years without dosing since I started.

The first time I took a psychedelic it was a research chemical on blotter at a friends house. During the peak we were watching the office and michael scott's face looked holographic and oddly distorted, almost like a van gogh painting. Well several months later I was back at that same friends house and we got stoned and watched the office. As I watching it, michael's face began to do that weird shape shifting thing again and I knew immediately I was experiencing some sort of flash back.

Right but that is because your brain is still developing. A fully developed brain that is chemically and pathogically normal doesn't experience trails, breathing walls, etc.

the flashbacks Ive had have been very subtle, like a sudden change in consciousness. I dont get full-on LSD peak effects of a flashback, more like a tiny sliver of the experience which reminds me of LSD.
I get them from shrooms too more often, same subtle effect. Likely cause i take shrooms more regularly.

Ptsd can cause flash backs--- not the same as what flashbacks from lsd or other paychedelics are supposed to be... Sometimes colors change and things get squiggly. These are different from the prodromes i have to migraines, very noticeably. The hallucinations are similar, towards the much milder part of the paychedelic spectrum. Clinically, i know of instances where users continue to trip long after the drug has worn off and need the help of a doc to come back down to earth.
Honestly, i think that's more of what a flashback is considered - a moment where you feel like you are under the influnce of the drug. This may have something to do with learning and memory, something that would involve the medial temporal lobes and cingulate cortexes, which are a part of the Default Mode Network, a subsystem of the brain that deals primarily in recalling past events while day dreaming and thinking about self in regards to others as well as future planning. This system also includes the frontal lobe.
I know in the case of flight or fight situations, the adrenal system in the body is activated and cortisol works in tandem with either norepinephrine or epinephrine (i forget which) to form flash bulb memories. LSD directly works on certain norepinephrine pathways in the brain, dealing with this circuitry in the Locus Coeruleus - a hub that is involved with the sense of Novelty.

I think a lot of what it is happening is remembering lsd and imagining what your surroundings look like while tripping. Some people have more hyper imaginations so maybe it effects those people more.

i never had a flashback and i haven't had any psychedelics in almost 20 years but on certain rare occasions i get this effect in the center of my field of vision that's like flying through a tunnel filled with clouds. it almost seems to coincide with me feeling amped up about something in a good way but it happens so infrequently that it's hard to say. i took acid around 75 times between the ages of 15-16 but then gave it up. a few years later though i became a hardcore ketamine addict and fiend for whatever other drugs i could get for 4 years and i think that is why i also suffer from a seizure condition which did not come about until i was 29 which was 6 years since i had given up doing drugs at that point.

Sometimes when I hear the dead I feel like I have consumed some acid, I think my mind is forming the association between the dead and tripping because I listened to them religiously when I tripped a bunch, so is acting up in a way which makes me feel like I am starting to come up on some doses, and I get very giddy.

Oh yeah, i get those sometimes. I learned about it in college.
Basically, if any tramatic or really unique/life-changing/surreal/vivid moment happens, its seared into your memory basically forever.
A good example is a car wreck, getting shot at in war or having a really intense/unique moment during an Acid trip.

Its interesting that 25% of the vote thus far is 'yes' but nobody has described anything remotely close to being propelled back into the peak of a full blown trip with faces melting walls crawling, sound waves smashing you in the face, galaxies forming in the mirror and thoughts pirouetting from your ears and drawing faces in the air.

I voted yes because i feel i've experienced 'flashbacks' not well described in the OP

I think I read some place that the whole flashback thing was a myth in how many people describe it, you know the myth of LSD stays in your body forever, or however that thing goes.
Instead we just have an experience which reminds of tripping, so we remember tripping and kind of feel that way. Sometimes when I smell vinegar I feel a mellowness come over me like I did a shot of dope, or if I smell a kind of burning plastic smell I feel like I smoked some DMT for a second, or if I smell certain cleaners I think of cocaine or meth.
I wish I knew more about the mind at the current moment, but the mind is an incredible thing, how powerful it is never ceases to amaze me.
I was picking mushrooms the other day, and the smell of some inactive Gymnopilus penetrans, made me feel like I was starting to come up on some shrooms. I believe I associated the smell of the inactive Gymnopilus, with active Gymnopilus species I have consumed in the past, they all smell kind of sweet anise like to me, so this triggered a response in my mind.

i get that too when i smell fresh cubes, it feels like im coming up on shrooms, light tripping.
Its crazy how specific smells are attached to specific memories. Happens with candy and other unique smellls that bring back memories of childhood.
But i agree, flashbacks are exaggerated but there is a thin slice of truth there. But full peak effects while sober aint happening. Sorry DEA.

The most common and clearest content of the flashbacks seems to involve the visual sensory system, but flashbacks have been reported in any sensory modality: taste, smell, touch, kinesthetics, vestibular changes, and auditory images. In addition, distortions of time sense, self-image, or reality sense may occur. This paper describes the visual forms of this symptom and compares it with known symptoms such as obsessive rumination, peremptory ideation, and recurrent pseudo-hallucinations.
Description of Flashbacks Flashbacks (flashes, flashing) may persist for weeks or months after the last drug experience. The most important variety is repeated intrusions of frightening images in spite of volitional efforts to avoid them. However, two lesser variants can be described briefly.
Spontaneous Return of Perceptual Distortions Distortions of perception experienced during the drug experience may recur long afterward, as previously reported(2). Subjective experiences include halo effects, blurred vision, shimmering, or reduplications of percepts, distortion of spatial planes, and changes in normal coloration. Micropsia, macropsia, and tunnel vision may also appear during the period "off" drugs. Examples of such perceptual distortions and elementary sensations are:
Patient A: Now I often see a bright shiny halo around people, especially at the dark edges-sometimes it's rainbow colors-like during the trip.
Patient B: Sometimes the sidewalk seems to bend as if it's going downwards--even when I'm not on anything-or it just kinda vibrates back and forth.
Increased Susceptibility to Spontaneous Imagery Some persons report that after repeated use of hallucinogens they find visual imagery occupies a greater proportion of their thinking than formerly. They also state that their imagery now has a different quality-it is more vivid, seems to spring from some nonvolitional source, and is less readily suppressed than formerly. The incidence of this type of flashback appears related to total dose over time.
Patient C: I see this giant iguana, all the time, man. Green. In corners. Like under your chair.
Doctor: Are you putting me on about that?
Patient C: No---you mean about under your chair like? No. I see it all right-sometimes even when I want to. It used to be fierce; now it's friendly.
Doctor: Used to be fierce?
Patient C: Well, like when I first had it-it was a monster from the dark lagoon and then it came at me sometimes. But now it's okay.
Doctor. Well, didn't you see stuff like that in your mind's eye all the time before any trips?
Patient C: Not like this, man. Not like this-it's real green.
Doctor: You mean, it's different?
Patient C: Oh, I see other things-this one's different-more so, I guess, more often, and clearer.
Patient D: Now I see things-walls, and faces, and caves-probably imprinted on my thalamus from the prehistoric past. Sometimes as clear as on a trip, but mostly not. My dreams sometimes are really spectacular now.
Recurrent Unbidden Images Unbidden images are those that repeatedly coerce their way into awareness, demanding attention and resisting efforts to dispel them. They have been described by those who experience them as having "a will of their own." Some persons are frightened by their incapacity to dispel the images. Anxiety reactions, even psychotic reactions, may result.
Case Reports The following three case reports the recurrent and unbidden imagery flashbacks.
Case 1. This 17-year-old boy had taken marihuana, dimethyltriptamine (DMT), methedrine, LSD, and LSD with arsenic ("for that special kick"). Although his behavior was noted by his friends to be "freaky when he was flashing," he was able to deliver his thoughts in a rational manner. He described his therme song as "LSD and Speed Are All That There Is for Me" and spent most of his time drawing morbid and bizarre references to death. His costume was black with steel link chains. During a recent "trip" he hallucinated a dark scorpion on the back of his hand and experienced terror: "It had many legs, and I was worried it might sting me." In the past five weeks - since the "trip" he claims to have ingested no drugs, but the scorpion continues as "flashings," sometimes in a changed position, but always brown or black in color.
Case 2. This 21 -year-old man had numerously trips on LSD and marihuana. He described himself as preoccupied with life and death. After taking 2.5-dimethoxy-4-methyl amphetamine (STP) for the first time, he had repeated visual and kinesthetic images of himself crashing through the window of his car. He had never had such an accident in reality, yet during the flashbacks he felt fear at vividness of the experience. He was sensitive about his flashback and said it was not a symptom but a "release of the within" from the drug. The image appeared symbolic of repressed fears of losing control and of destructiveness.
Case 3. A 16-year-old male high school dropout living in the Haight-Ashbury community reported an estimated ten LSD trips and 100 marihuana smokings. He denied use of other drugs. Generally, during LSD trips he experienced interesting, wild, intense, and usually pleasant visual imagery. Recently, however, he had a "bad trip" with images of a human figure being sucked into the vortex of a whirlpool. This image began returning three weeks after the LSD trip and persisted for about three additional weeks. Five to ten times a day the vivid black and white images interrupted whatever he was thinking. These images were more pressing when he was "high" on marihuana. Whenever he had the flashback, he felt frightened and unsuccessfully tried to get rid of it. Although the time seemed very long, he knew that after approximately 15 to 20 seconds the image would leave of its own accord.

at work we have this white opaque underlit bar, at times depending on whats running the electrical flow will flicker. that shit strains the hell out of my eyes and reminds me of the vivid flashing you get at times from LSD.
nothing i have dealt with would be considered a flashback though.

Most of that description is HPPD, or something too mild to even separate from placebo / misc brain farts.
The people being interviewed sound very far from credible, I'll take the extensive experience of a dozen shroomerites and a hundred psychonauts I've met over those random shortbussers.

Back when i was taking quite a few different RC tryptamines/phenethylamines like once a week, i was dead sober in a doctors office and all of a sudden the floor just turned into water for like 30 seconds. That was about as crazy as it ever got. Would also be sober and be reading something and get the classic breathing/floating of letters on the background.
It was always visual too and not mental at all.

Some of what's been described are things i've personally experienced. As for the DSM, flashbacks are listed along side HPPD and may be two names for the same symptomatic phenomenon, and is experientially subjective

Never had a "true hallucinogenic flashback" but Ive had times where things would remind me and take me back to a certain time i tripped. For example when I eat watermelon it brings me back to one time I tripped stupid hard and ate some watermelon that I thought was some type of raw animal meat from looking into the fleshy watermelon so much. Even if I were to stare at some watermelon to this day I could probably get the feelings I once had on that acid trip lol
