    #23628581 - 09/09/16 10:07 AM (7 years, 4 months ago)

Swim is growing a few plants and wants to know if they cannabis plants have a time where they die off naturally or can they grow all year round as long as you dont harvest?

as long as there is room for roots to grow or be pruned and the plant canopy kept healthy they can grow for years..i've had mother plants almost 2 years old flower out fine after being moms for that long...some varieties may try to shoot out male flowers eventually though no matter what..self preservation ya know..

one they start flowering they are fully matured in 90 days and they start to turn purple from the weight and the leaves fall off

this is the best time to harvest because I feel like the plant wouldn't know what is going on anyway, although I feel super bad I love all my plants

if you leave the buds on the plant uses those as energy reserves and goes back into veg and it can flower again it just wont be as much and it'll take just as long

so outside like 8 months to a couple years if it can survive winter I don't know if they could hibernate during the winter most dry out from lack of water

If you get cloning root hormone, you can keep a strain going for a long time. Everytime you clone it, it has the potential to be a weaker plant - however I had one plant grown from seed that mothered dozens of plants, and those plants mothered strong plants as well. I don't think you have to worry too much about over cloning until you go through several generations down the line.

You could make one plant go on for years if you wanted to.

I had moms old as 4yrs.. but that was an exception, most more close to 2 yrs.. but if you was growing some hobby plants just to see how long they would live. might be longer than that..

Mother plants can be kept for extended periods, but you have to keep them separate from the crop, as they need to maintain the vegetative light cycle.

Once cannabis flowers, the plant eventually dies at the end of the cycle -- in a natural crop, the plants (male and female) go to flower, produce seed, and die.  Cannabis is an annual, but the plant can be tricked into thinking that harvest season (when the light switches to shorter duration which triggers the plant to flower) never comes.
Once had it put to me that the ideal time to harvest is the moment the plant actually begins to die at the end of the flowering cycle -- almost poetic.

Unless you got an auto-flower strain, then you're out of luck.

All plants aren't "Mature in 90 days", different plants/strains and growing conditions take different amounts of time to mature. Weed doesn't turn purple because of the weight, either.

Mothers can be kept for years, but as said, (very) slowly worsen. Clones won't root as well, and overall hardiness decreases, among other things.

I remember hearing a rumor (maybe urban legend?)  that some of the dutch coffee shops have original mother plants from like 15 years ago.
