First time oysters, first time bulk... Just need a little guidance
    #23628406 - 09/09/16 08:54 AM (7 years, 4 months ago)

I've done PF Tek a few times, and I'm interested in moving to rye jars. I have a Blue Ouster LC syringe that I'm itching to use on this. Unlike BRF cakes though, there doesn't seem to be much in the way of a complete start-to-finish write up for doing a bulk grow of oysters (makes sense, since edibles are a niche here, and there's so many options with bulk grows in general). So basically, I'm just hoping someone can let me know if I'm on the right track or if i'm missing something obvious.

So I have a few jars ready, I made some DIY lids with GE filters and SHIPs. Next, I would rinse (till water is clear), then soak (24 hours), then jar and PC (90-120 minutes) my rye berries. Then I inoculate my jars, let them colonize to 30%, shake, let colonize to 100%, and shake again. Pasteurize some straw, then layer the straw with my new spawn a few times in a laundry basket, cover with a garbage bag and let colonize for a week or so. Check on it, cover again and colonize for another week, or until 100% colonized. Take it out of the bag, put it outside (or somewhere with good temperature and humidity), make sure it has the water it needs and....oyster mushrooms?

Obviously there's more detail to it, and I'll continue reading and making sure I get those details right, but that's the gist of it, no?

My main issue is amounts, both of grain spawn and straw substrate. I want to do one laundry basket for now, can anyone give me a ballpark of how many quart jars of spawn I should try to have before inoculating my straw? I got five pounds of rye and I have seven jar lids ready to go (no idea why I decided seven was the right number) but I could get more of either if that's necessary.

Thanks for the help. I hope I don't come off as terribly naive, I've been reading and researching (both here and the wide web) for the last month or so; I'm just getting to the point where I'm trying to connect all the research I've done and want to make sure I've got it down pat. Hope to start rinsing and soaking my rye berries today.

Sounds right. Spawn rates are all over ,some use a little some use a lot. The more spawn = more energy and faster colonization and usually more mushrooms. I prefer heavy spawn rate.

In that case, how much liquid culture should I be inoculating each quart jar with? 1cc? 2.5cc?

Can I get away with filling my entire laundry basket with straw? I've seen a lot of conflicting opinions on this one, with some folks filling it full, and other folks only putting in a few inches of substrate, out of worry that the center of the mass might start to breed contams. FWIW, I'm working with a short, rectangular laundry basket, not the tall, skinny kind.

Thanks for the help, btw. I feel like I'm right on the cusp of having this all figured out, but I'm a little shy of just jumping in; mushroom culture ain't cheap! Once I get something going, I feel like I'll be a lot less nervous, as I can do G2G transfers, take spore prints for new syringes, clone mushrooms, etc. It's just the initial launch that has me flustered!

Most of us have been where you are at, and wondering the same questions. I know I certainly was. the answer is yes, you can just fill a whole waste paper basket with straw. as far as how much liquid inoculation to use, that depends a lot on how many live cells/spores are in the mix. It does not take much and since the medium used to carry it, is usually water, you do NOT want too much moisture.water in your spawn, because sitting water does grow bacteria, and the amounts used also depend on the spawn you are using, ie wild bird seed, specific seeds like rye, etc.

a small drop or two should contain millions of living cells that will divide and work just fine. a few cc's is way plenty. each cc is 20 drops actually.

IMO if you are doing a basket grow, some of the most important parts are:
good consolidated spawn.
pasteurizing your substrate well and proper to give the spawn a good chance to grow without interference or too much competition.
compacting the straw well, which involves cutting it into smaller segments so it is denser and allows easy leap off/transferring between pieces from the growing mycelium.
and from there it is just the right growing conditions/humidity/temp/etc.

Also let me add, you may wish to get into agar/liquid inoculations and making slants/etc. to keep making your own later.

Have you seen RR's laundry basket tek? Whenever you can learn from him it's a good idea to do so.

Alice asked the Cheshire Cat, who was sitting in a tree, “What road do I take?”

The cat asked, “Where do you want to go?”

“I don’t know,” Alice answered.

“Then,” said the cat, “it really doesn’t matter, does it?”

No, I haven't bought the videos. I'm not much of a visual/auditory learner, I am much better with written instructions.

Honestly I would recommend going with grow bags- I've heard a lot of people talk about heat death with the larger bucket/basket teks- but so far seems like you are on the right track!

High water content is such a game changer.

Both mycelial activity and nitrates cause heat, which we know.
We also know water has cooling, dissipation properties.

Increased water content or bag dunk (no holes).
