PC Culture Getting Out of Control Again 3

So I've been following this shitstorm that's been ensuing on social media: http://nextshark.com/tyler-akin-pho-stock-video/?fb_comment_id=fbc_1242797102419130_1243716458993861_1243716458993861#f19bbc7d4
A popular online foodie magazine posted a video called "How to Eat Pho," which featured Chef Tyler Akin, a white guy, owner of Stock in Philadelphia (which IMO is one of the best pho restaurants hands down). The video has since been taken down.
A bunch of Vietnamese people got super offended by his video, simply because he said that you shouldn't put sriracha or hoisin in the broth without tasting it first, because it hurts as a chef. WHICH IS A VERY UNDERSTANDABLE COMMENT. Putting sriracha or hoisin in a bowl of good pho is like putting A1 or ketchup on a good steak. I mean WTF is so hard to understand about that?!
Then these dumb motherfuckers bombarded this guy's Yelp reviews with 1-star ratings, ruining this guy's business and reputation that he worked so hard for, all because of his comments in the video which weren't even remotely offensive.
I'm so upset because I love this place, I know the owner and used to dine here in Philly all the time... personally, I think he makes BETTER pho than a lot of the supposed "authentic" Vietnamese places. He uses free-range, organic meats, fresh and clean vegetables, no MSG or chemicals in his broth, the quality of his broth is so clean and complex and rich.
And all these butthurt idiots are crying about how there's no way he could possibly make an authentic bowl of pho because he's white. They've never tasted his food, they don't know who he studied under... he could have studied under a world-famous, Michelin-ranked Vietnamese chef for all they know.
Anyways, I thought I'd post this here while the Yelp shitstorrm and the comments section of these pages were still going hard. Feel free to chime in and leave this guy some comments or ratings too while it's still going on.

If his business is half as good as he thinks then some spiteful online reviews won't hurt it.

His ratings were close to 5 stars before this began, at one point they went down to 3 because of this shitstorm.
You also have to understand he is a very small business owner. He is operating a very small restaurant that is only able to seat 15 people max. So even though the restaurant is almost full every time they are open, they've still come very close to closing many times. They've had to, for example, discontinue their beef pho and only serve their free-range chicken pho instead, to help cut costs to save the business.
It's not right what these people are doing. They could really ruin this guy's business, considering how tight profits are for this guy, even though he serves bomb pho. And yes, I can vouch, I prefer his pho better to pho I've had in Little Saigon even.

Seems like the site is aware that a lot of recent reviews are from people reacting to this controversy who haven't eaten there. There's a disclaimer to that effect and a bunch of those reviews are categorized as "not currently recommended". It's stupid that they're doing it but I don't know if it will necessarily have a lasting effect on his business.

You underestimate the effects of mob-justice social media. Social media outrage has cost people their careers.
Remember that dentist who killed Cecil the lion? Thousands of Yelpers flooded his business with negative reviews, he received death threats and bomb threats at his office, and it eventually led to him closing his dentistry business only a week later.

Yeah but that guy killed a lion, this guy really didn't do fuck all. It's a very different situation. The people currently pissed off at him will eventually lose interest, and it sounds there's a good chance their troll reviews won't stay up.

That's true, but they've already gotten hundreds of responded on that page alone, thousands if you count other websites where their reputation is tarnished.
I don't have too much faith in Yelp's policing, they supposedly used the same community guidelines on Mr. Cecil lion hunter, and yet all the Cecil-related comments remained up on his ratings page.

Yeah I'm not too familiar with the site or its policies but they did seem to get the "beware of the recent reviews" message across when I checked out your link. Either way it's a shitty thing for those people to do over something so petty, and hopefully the business makes it through ok.

I put up a positive review since I wanted to at least undo one bad asshole's fake review. Plus I figured I had been a loyal customer for years, and had never previously reviewed, and I should do so now.
It's crazy, that review hasn't even been up for a day, and I've already gotten a dozen messages about it. Over half of them are positive, just thanking me for supporting and protecting small businesses and things like that. But the other half I've gotten comments about me being a "silver spoon North Vietnamese snob" hahaha lmfaooooooo!!!

Are you joking? It costs wayyyyy more than that to make pho, especially if you factor in time. A good bowl of pho takes 4-8 hours to make. The best pho takes 2-3 days to make for the broth to set.
In fact, pho is one of the only foods I refuse to cook at home. Not only does it take a minimum of 4-8 hours, but you also have to buy several lbs of beef bones and brisket, which cost WAY more than $2. Along with spices such as whole star anise, which may not be easy to procure. I don't know where you're doing your shopping...
It's cheaper to buy that $8 bowl of pho if you factor in time and resources.
There are a lot of places that upsell at a crazy overcharged price. Pho is not one of those things. It's actually quite reasonable when you factor in how much time and effort goes into making a bowl of this.
Pho, tonkotsu ramen, and cheeseburgers are some of the things I refuse to make at home... as long as I can get an In-N-Out cheeseburger for $2, or a bowl of ramen or pho for $8, I see no reason to spend half a day slaving over a hot stove to make it.

Yeah, putting ketchup on your steak is trashy. If you feel the need to add sriracha to pho, its probably not worth the time to eat it.
Good rule of thumb: if a chef made it, don't alter it in any way.

Foreigners just don't like the American standard because it makes their own standards look bad. They get away with selling bullshit at top dollar because stupid asses just want something ethnic. (Is that the right word?)

Hah, that's so true. Because the truth is, "authentic" Vietnamese is NOT soooo much better, like they are claiming.
Have you ever seen a lot of these authentic Vietnamese restaurant? They're filthy, and a lot of them are regularly getting shut down by the health department, and when they do pass the health inspection, they might only pass with a C or a B rating.
Not only that, but a lot of "authentic" Vietnamese pho restaurants have served me withered or discolored basil leaves or dry vegetables that look like they haven't been washed, broth that clearly had MSG or other flavor enhancers added to it, and those meatballs that always come out in the combination pho are highly questionable processed mystery meat product at best.
So here's this guy making pho in an impeccably clean, hygienic restaurant with top-quality ingredients. He's using grass-fed beef, free-range, organic chicken, crisp and freshly washed produce, broth that has nothing added to it except sea salt and star anise and a variety of spices... and people have the audacity to say he doesn't make "authentic" pho?!
Bitch, his pho is WAY more authentic, and WAY more similar to what the REAL Vietnamese people deep in the rural villages eat.
People are so used to eating garbage chemical foods, and are so misguided by identity politics, that now they can't even recognize true, pure flavors when they see it anymore.
