SGFC pinning vs. Aerial mycelium. Please help.
    #23625349 - 09/08/16 10:31 AM (7 years, 5 months ago)

I've tried researching and can't find a solid answer what the difference is between pinning and aerial mycelium. Either way, please look at these pics and let me know if something is wrong. There are two(now 2 days old) mushrooms, yet not a single other one has formed. I've heard too high humidity causes aerial mycelium, but I Don't understand why id have 2 though, if that's true. Anyways, this is my first grow so any info is greatly appreciated!

Check pinning factors:

-enough FAE?

-enough misting? (do the cakes look too dry? too wet? do you fan after you mist?)

-is there a light present? and is it on a cycle?

I think your best bet is to increase FAE and see what happens.

It does look like aerial myc to me, but I've never done cakes so I can't tell you firsthand.

Things do look pretty moist in there; increasing FAE can't hurt anything. Aerial myc can be caused by constantly high RH, bacteria, or just genetics, and it doesn't always mean your cakes won't produce.

Definitely enough misting. I'm worried rh is too high. It's always 99% and the cakes seem to take half a day to not have visible signs of water. I've been fanning more recently, but still nothing. It almost seems like more mycelia is extending. I was worried one cake had cob web mold so I isolated it. Another one slightly appears to have some, but my partner disagrees and believes it's just mycelium. If that's the case, I'll just increase fae and hope for the best. Does removing some pearlite sound like a good idea?

Fanning does not help with FAE, but just helps starting evaporation after misting.

Try misting less and leaving the lid partially closed to let some more air in.  Cobweb likes low FAE and high RH, so increasing FAE and lowering RH may help getting rid of it.

A properly built SGFC should be fine actually.  RH will fluctuate.  Honestly I've heard many TCs say that if you mist the surface of your cakes, if it takes about 12 hours for the surface to completely dry, then your FAE/humidity is in check.

It looks to me like you're over misting honestly.  Those cakes look pretty saturated, and the darkness of the caps on those pins concerns me a bit.  They almost look like they are getting ready to abort.  The mycelium on the caps would indicate wet conditions also.

If you feel the humidity is too high, you can always leave the lid off awhile, an hour or two at a time should suffice before checking on them, and adjusting as needed.
