Reishi on pine pellets?
    #23621695 - 09/07/16 11:34 AM (7 years, 4 months ago)

I plan to do a big Red Reishi grow, 10x 20qt minimonos a la Pastywhyte.

Unfortunately I can't get hardwood of any sort locally, fuel pellets or otherwise.
I can however get pine fuel pellets and shavings very very cheap.
Is it possible to fruit Red Reishi on pine?

I can get straw bales and fir pellets instead if needed but I already have 2 big bags of pine fuel pellets.

What about coir? Has anyone managed to fruit Reishi on CVG?

Supposedly my Reishi culture is G. lucidum but it may be another Ganoderma species.

Edit: It turns out one of the bags is fir, so I have that as an option without having to buy more pellets.

CONCLUSION:
Pine and fir will support a decent reishi pinset.
Mold lowered my yields by a huge amount, but I am confident a better grower than I could use conifer substrates to grow reishi without an issue.

In my experience using pine has work for oysters, though not ideal, and Maitake actually prefer pine to hardwood, but I have yet to experiment with reishi on pine. Reishi is a very strong colonizer so I would assume you could cultivate on pine- though if you can get straw why not do both and run a comparison?

I was going to suggest 50/50 paper and pine, worked for King oyster.
TravelAgency has already proven 100% pine works ok.

50/50 pine and straw should work well.

I'll do some test runs with pine, straw and a combination then, maybe also CVG. Thanks guys!

Edit: just A2Gd 20 jars of rye. Pics of one of the source plates and the jars after A2G and labeling:

I honestly wouldn't bother with CVG- that is really only good for secondary decomposes like Cubs and agaricus.

Noted. I'll skip the coir then.

Might as well turn this in to a grow log!

The Reishi is already jumping off the agar on to the grains. Such a fast colonizer.

Update:
I think this is the same jar as the last photo.
It's growing so quickly!

All 20 jars look clean so far! Super excited.
Even the jar I accidentally put two wedges in and the one I had to violently shake to dislodge the wedge from the lid seem to be progressing nicely.

Update:

Going to shake the shit out of these jars today.
Shook one two days ago as a test and it has recovered well.

These jars recovered much faster than the first one I shook.

Already showing new growth.
I think the difference is because my grow room is sitting at around 70F now instead of 50-60 like it was before.

So close!

All of them look like this now:

With the exception of the one I shook early, which is lagging behind:

Well, one of the jars exploded with green mold all over... Hopefully it's the only one.

I checked all the rest and they seem fine.
A spore probably got in when I A2Gd.

Going to spawn all of them to the various subs today.
Some look a little sketchy/wispy and some have made a drop or two of metabolites.
Still just the one that turned green. No outward signs of mold otherwise.

I'm just going to pair the sketchy ones together so if they turn in to little Amityville horrors I don't lose all my tubs.

Spawned to all ten tubs. One of the pine tubs only got 1 quart of spawn because of that jar going green.

I decided to only do pine and fir because straw is a pain in the ass to prep.
I ended up making way too much sawdust
It ended up a bit dry so I poured more hot water on it after pasteurizing.
Seems to have fixed the problem, but it made the sawdust expand more so now I have like 6 extra quarts.

Added about 4 percent gypsum when I prepped it. The gypsum is from recycled sheetrock so some bits of cardboard are present.

Ratio is 2:3 spawn:sub.
