PF Tek - rice flour settles down
    #23620943 - 09/07/16 06:52 AM (7 years, 4 months ago)

Hi Guys,

I have prepared some glasses with the standard PF-Tek method using 2-1-1 verm., brown rice flour and water.

After PRC the jars, the rice flour settles down at the bottom of the jars:

Until now, I can see mycelium growing but I am afraid if it can't colonize the bottom of the jar since the rice flour settles down there. Will this be a problem?

Thanks!

I've never had this happened to me, try mixing it better next time.  If that doesn't help, try using finer vermiculite.

Maybe thats why you pur the water in dry verm and sprinkle and mix in the flour so its all over..which you didnt do clearly

I mixed verm + flour first and then pour water over.

This is self-made rice flour, made with my high speed blender.

Do you think the myc will still colonize the bottom of the jar. If not, what can I do?

What will happen will happen, there is nothing to do at this point.

If you're making the flour yourself, you should grind it again and again until it is fine dust -like flour should be.

I used to mix verm and flour first too when I was making cakes, if you pour the water slowly while mixing the verm and flour as you pour, there will be no problem.

Just wait and see how they colonize.  They should at least give you some fruits to take spore prints and start over -if you don't have any spores left.

I made a few jars like that once..
its really important to bring the verm to field capacity
and then in small amounts, mix the flour in.

IME it did a better job of 'coating' the hydrated verm if
i used a small amount of flour at a time. also excess water
can turn the flour into a thick slurry. no good :frown:

Like other people said you wanna put verm in a bowl then slowly add water until it reaches capacity. After that you wanna slowly add the flour. The goal is to "coat" the wet verm with the flour

Step one pour one cup of water on 2 cups vermiculite..step two sprinkle one cup brf stir in while mixing..step 3 load jars...this is some elementary basics so if you cant even get that right...idk might not be any hope for ya...

exactly mushboy.

cant you just stick to one? https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showprofile.php?User=375582

field capacity for cakes is too much. drier cakes colonize faster. then you dunk them before fruiting so they're still at max water capasity when fruited.

hahahah no dont do it that way bro.

bring the verm to field capacity FIRST. then slowly add 1 large spoonful of brf
to the mix. sometimes you need to adjust the water content once you have added
a couple of spoons of the flour.

see the difference dude. come on. some people struggle with getting the consistency
correct so it helps to give the best info.

damn.

EDIT: fighting about the pf tek is like fighting about how to jerk off. just
play around and do what feels right.

This helped me a lot! Next time I will try to add all ingredients in the proper sequence and with more attention.

For the jars I made, I just threw the 2-1-1 (verm., rice flour and water) in bowl and mixed everything together and got a shameful result... Luckily, I made some other jars with rye and they grow simply wonderful. I will use them for casing.

However, I will not throw the jars with the vermiculite mix away. Maybe they will still turn into healthy little cakes.

You live and learn...

Thank you all guys

Oh sweet!
rye is supposed to be the best(i use wbs)

buy casing i assume you mean something like this?

just the grains dumped in a tub and covered with a casging layer?
it worked... but i only got 1 flush before it contam. it had exposed
grains. i was a nub.

try using the grains to colonize a mono tub and do a bulk run?!
but mastering pf is really the best way to start..

read up on franks. i think its explained perfectly for beginners.

I to grind up my own brf in a ninja blender. if I was you I wouldn't put the verm and brf together then pour water. I only say this because IME the Brf didn't get mixed well with the verm and we just made it to sticky.

take your 2parts verm 1 part water. mix that until all the verm looks moist. if you have to add more water just add a little at a time.
if it looks to wet add a little verm.

then add your brf and mix that around real well. by mixing I dont mean just stirring it around in circles. I'm talking about you want to mix it as if your making your own chex mix. or tossing a salad. in other words mix that shit up good lol.that way you don't have clumps of brf.

I remember my first try of doing Pf tek I only had half pint regular mouth jars. I did 2cups verm 1 cup brf 1 cup water. I ended up with 5 and a half jars.
I thought I could be bright and just poor a little be of dry brf. of course I put my dry verm on top portion of the jars as a casing.
that jar ended up taking a long time to spawn.
once spawned it was at 45% when the rest of jars were at 99-100%. I realized that I F that jar up! lol.
The good idea fairy came to me again. so I decided to take the stalled jar, after my other jars were birthed after 1 week of 100% colonization, and break them up and did a Pf Brf to Grain. luckily this worked with no signs of contam. I ended up knocking up 5 RBS qt. jars with 1 half pint brf. they colonized to 100% in less than 2 weeks.
I won't be having clumps of brf in my jars again nor will try the Brf to grain. lol

These are my rye jars after 3 Weeks (shook after 2 Weeks):

Today I have checked the PF-Tek (verm, BRF)  jars and it looks like the mycelium is digging to the BRF sediment (1 Week so far):

What do you think so far? Does rye really takes normally that long until fully colonized? Looks like PF-Tek (BRF, verm) faster colonizes.

Both looking good.

When they are at %30 colonization, you can mix you rye jars by beating them against something like an inflated bike tire or roll of duct tape to break the colonized mycelium and then shaking them for a few seconds.  That'll help colonize faster but don't do it more than once as it takes up to 48 horus for mycelium to recover from this -and shaking once will be enough distribute colonized mycelium evenly.  Don't get scared if some of the mycelium turns blue, it's just bruising.

Is there enough gas exchange, when I have taped the four small injection holes with Micropore? I am afraid the mycelium can stop grow. I saw on many pictures that a lot of people make a big hole in the lid and seal it with Tyvek or Micropore.

There is enough GE if there are holes on the lid.  But if you have foil for a lid on your grain jar, shaking it is out of the question I guess.

Hey guys,

I thought I might bring an update to my PF-Tek jars. Exactly 21 days have passed so far and I am wondering if they are ready for birthing or if I should wait another week until the vermiculate top layer has been colonized, see below:

In two other jars the mycelium is still colonizing the bottom but it is going really slow.

What do you think?

What is meant with full colonization? It is still trying to colonize top vermiculate layer partly.

Full colonization includes only the nutritious parts, so not vermiculite.  You don't want the mycelium to colonize the top vermiculite, that's for protection only; it serves as a barrier.

Do you know how many days passed since full colonization?

On most jars 5 days have passed but I have some other jars were the nutrious parts are still not colonized.

I think I will wait another week to get sure all is done properly.

Don't wait any longer, birth the colonized jars, remember to dunk and roll .) give them a good wash after they're dunked to wash any bacteria on surface.

Jars with uncolonized patches may or may not be contaminated.  Pictures would help.
