for starters, i've been posting on this board for almost six years now. i would like to think of myself as a grounded person of good character whose online presence tends to consistently show that. i try to make thoughtful contributions to discussions; i try to give the best advice i can give, especially to the younger posters; i don't bully; and i don't promote irresponsible behavior. the fact that you are so quick to draw the conclusion that i'm an awful person from what seems like reading two sentences in a post i make about a possible career path seems to be more about who you are than who i am.
but with that said, you guys should learn how to identify sarcasm. i was being facetious with the part about "dealing in bullshit". i'm pretty sure i said this in an earlier post, but i'll say it again: even if i disagree with some of the candidates' politics, providing services that help them run for office - in my own limited way - would be an expression of civic virtue because it would be in service to the ideal of democracy existing as a marketplace of ideas, primarily through the spread of propaganda during election cycles. if you took offense to the way i used the term 'propaganda', i was using it in the neutral sense rather than the cynical sense. democracy runs on rhetoric, most of which is spread through propaganda.
it's not that i am blind to the problems with our politics. i mean, if i was working for a PAC or super-PAC, your criticism might be warranted. but to bring things back into focus here, i'm in commercial printing. my company has an entire department devoted to political marketing and it seems like a really interesting line of work.

I wasn't saying you were a terrible person. I was just saying that in my mind working in politics or marketing or both together is not 'highly admirable'. A politician could be highly admirable if they were to actually get something legitimate accomplished.

it seems justifiable to be upset over the current state of affairs in american politics. it also seems justifiable to think that we have some very bad actors running the show, especially when it comes to the people who own our policy makers. but as long as we need policies, we need policy makers and a system to elect, remove and replace those policy makers. criticizing me for simply wishing to play a very small role in how that system behaves is misdirected anger.

I'm not angry and I'm not criticizing you. I'm criticizing your use of the term "highly admirable". It's like calling people heroes for coming out as gay or other not actually heroic things.

Go BACK to school? No thanks
I graduated college, got a fancy biology degree, and now I only use it to grow. Glad I did it now that it's all said and done, but I do often wonder if I could have made it just as far without the degree and all the associated debt.
In mho college is not worth what it costs these days, and much of what you learn you will never use. But what you will use goes far beyond the knowledge you will gain directly from your textbooks. The college experience itself may be worth more than all the fancy books you read while attending. That said, if your someone considering going to school, make sure its gonna be worth it, I recommend finding a school that will challenge you to work hard, better yourself, and think bigger.

I studied agricultural sci/business, I think I lucked out with it. I'm happy and I'm using it to make my living 2 years after graduating. I cant think of any other degree id rather have. Most of the knowledge I got from it has been really useful. All of it is on the internet, but most of it I wouldn't have known it existed if it weren't for my education.

Hey Trees, what is it that you do now a days, if you don't mind me asking?
I am curious because that sounds like a very useful degree and I'm personally very interested in permaculture. I worked on some farms throughout college and am still very interest is possibly pursuing a career in some form of permaculture.
To be 100% honest, the only thing I have every caught myself saying that I wished I had studied in school is business. Would have helped me a ton in starting my business. But hell, it's like you said, its all online anyways, so I've just been learning as I go.

You can state whatever you want. Is it completely unacceptable for me to respond to what you state?
You should probably not read my posts if you can't just read what they actually say and refrain from armchair psychologizing.

You don't know what moving the goal posts means. For someone who's getting a philosophy degree, you're not very good at debating.

Trees, that sounds really great. I'm also very interest in aquaponics and sustainability in general. Your right, honestly permaculture will probably be more of a home hobby, but I have considered permaculture design, etc. I know where your coming from though, gotta make that money lol. Right now I have a solar company with some good friends. It's extremely profitable, but not super fun. It's basically glorified construction, but at least its headed in the right direction, sustainability speaking. Plus I work with some of my best friends
Thanks for the insight!
