My job is pretty much 100% secure. The code i work with is every programmers nightmare. Its almost entirely undocumented spagetti. For someone new to get a hold of whats going on would take a lot of time. Its fascinating how cryptic php code can be if you really try.

Ah you lucked out there man. My last job was with one of the biggest now webserver and cloud providers. Top 3 company to work for in country in terms of employee satisfaction when I joined. I'm sure you'll know the name but don't wanna suy in public. They were a definite 'theory Y' company, unlike the 'theory X' in old corps (wiki).
They valued their people and always let them know it. Constant team spirit, days out, gifts, personalised T-shirts, a CEO that talked to every employee. Sounds like you got that kinda thing. My best friend is still there, I got 'honourably discharged' cause I stupidly layed out some prick at the xmas party.
Funny, the Indian thing happened in the public facing side of many industries here (IT massively of course) but joe public complained like fuck so they reversed it. Now it's all the internal shit, away from the public eye, but I know, like you saw, it's gonna go the same way in the end. They'll have to reverse it. The Indian people, as much as I loved them when visiting their country, just ain't cut out for the work.
I dunno, ProIV, and the specific software I support that runs in it, is very lucrative cause it's old and rare. Guys leaving my role and going to the banks directly have taken contracts on £4-700 a day. Fuck, COBOL experts can get twice that, there's so few of them. And there aint many that know what I know. But the corporate environment has come to trouble me a lot. When I move to Australia next year, I know I'll have to spend another year or so in it. But if the mining industry there were still booming as it was a couple of years back, I'd rather spend a year in a mine.
I'm coming to the point I'm months from spendin 1/2 my working life on my feet and 1/2 at a desk. I just want away from the desk. I'm here most hours in a day. Don't you ever feel that?

Working at a desk never really bothered me that much. I'd rather be doing that installing satellite dishes or whatever on 140 degree roofs. In a mine man? Don't those guys usually come down with crazy lung problems and shit. Maybe get an adjustable desk so you can stand and sit as you like?

Meh, I've smoked for 18 years, I doubt my lungs are gonna last much past their 60th year anyway. It's great money, and away from the city, with the kinda guys I know I'd enjoy working with (working in a skyscraper in London I really don't get on with any of the daytime/office/normal people - it's the middle of the night secutory guards and building maintenance guys that are my kin). Seriously man, in all but skillset, I'm like a square peg in a round hole in this field.
And if I want the big contractor wages in Aus for a year to build up some funds to retire to farm life my 35, it's gonna get worse before it gets better. Ima have to wear a suit, and do 9-5, and interact frequently with higher ups who are just essentially non-public facing politcians (my most disliked group of peole on the planet).
I know I soound like I'm having a moan, I'm not, I got mad privieges working in this field. But having spent 14 years digging myself into it, I'm gonna have to spend a few digging out. As the moning industry in Aus has shut down due to china's growth slowing by 2.5% or some shit. I dunno, I might have to look into other high risk, high wage options when I'm there in Dec.
Even working remotely/from home sounds like it could be alright, but only for so more years before I need an active job to me fit. I cannot be spending 10+ hours a day on my ass when I hit 40.
As for progressive ways of thinking/working, like the desks you mention (I know, great idea), that's the scandanavians who think like that. I'm in England, where they just passed the psychoactive substances bill. Probably the only country heading down the shitter quicker than America, due to our resistance to progress.
How old are you s'ism?

i figured you were just looking to take a shot at me rather than seeking an apologia for my (possible) career path, so i kept it at that i think it's really special that you hold those beliefs. i deeply apologize that my response lacked the novelty you were seeking. next time you go out of your way to be a pretentious asshole to me, i'll work harder to put you in your place with more panache.

I'd go for marine biology like I always talked about as a kid.
I went to one of the best art schools in the country but a BFA in painting and printmaking doesn't get you many jobs. I've actually taken it off my resume because people think "Artist. He's obviously a sissy that could never hack it in the construction business". Now it just says Bachelors Degree.

Unlike some, if I could go back in time I would have went to college - for anything - and not fucked off. But I don't know for what then or now. A big reason (excuse) I used back in the day. Not like I haven't had valuable experience anyway (just not so much on the pay-grade side). I mean I worked on a farm for a decade doing shit work for shit pay. Thought I was going to stay there forever. Following, was a bad-ass at commissioned sales. Then contracted for an international financial firm in technical support. (they wanted to hire me but I fucked it up with calling in hungover so much and using JWH compounds at work.)
Stay in school kids.

I think it's more likely you don't have an apologia. If you do indeed have a legitimate reason that you think dealing in what you yourself describe as 'propaganda' and 'bullshit' is 'highly admirable', I would love to hear it.
