Possibly a very rare specimen
    #23618175 - 09/06/16 01:05 PM (7 years, 4 months ago)

Hello! I'm a novice hunter, and recently I've been hunting gymnopilus julionus/luteus. They're pretty easy to identify, and hard to mix up with other local species. But today I found something *very* odd. So I've come here in the hopes that this can be given a positive ID, and if it can't... My hopes are that I've discovered a rare new, more powerful laughing gym.

Habitat:
Found in soil at the base of a dying cedar tree, in the vicinity or a dead spruce. Ground covered in conifer needles. Gymnopilus Julionus found in close proximity.

Gills:
Purple, close, of alternating depth matching that of gymnopilus j. Suspected stipe attachment while young, now detached.

Stem:
About 2", maybe a little more. Solid, blruising blue-purple. Wider at the foot, uniform otherwise. Smooth and firm. Orange ring at the apex, where the veil was.

Cap:
About 2", a little wider perhaps. Scaly. Incurved margine at the edges, quickly drying and silky/soft when made wet. Blue-purple with obvious buff orange undertones, as if the purple took it over at some point.

Spore print color:
Rusty orange to pumpkin orange.

Bruising:
Purple blue

Other information:
It smells rather like root beer...

if you find g. luteus the smell will give it away, keep that in mind. smells like a fruity perfume, not at all like a mushroom. if your in the northeast (im assuming you are because no one hunts gyms unless there in the n.e.) theyre just starting to fruit now, a little later than normal because it hasnt rained much, but now is the time to find them
