Neem Oil & Mushroom Farms
    #23607173 - 09/03/16 08:11 AM (7 years, 5 months ago)

Hey guys,

Always used zappers, Diamotaceous earth and various other organic means of pest control.
I am expanding my business, I have been thwarted in the past by the fact Neem is also a fungicide, but I have read vague articles describing organic mushroom farms use it.

Can anyone who is well versed please educate me on how this will not affect my mushrooms if sprayed in a grow tent since it is also considered a fungicide?

Will this be fine to spray during fruiting also? Or is this reserved to a mycellial stage only?

Thanks alot Shroomers!

You can use bleach it's considered organic.  Obviously not when substrate is in there tho.

I just don't see how something that is considered a fungicide, can be used on contamination and pests without it inhibiting the mushroom's growth.
Unless there is some form of selectivity, or that the mushroom mycellium itself is too strong to destroy in such a manner when compared to Trich and other contam problems.

Basically, I got lots of shrooms in there, with more coming. I don't wanna go in and spray, only to destroy lots of work.
I guess I'll have to do a test on one bag and see the results for myself unfortunately.
Was hoping someone would have the knowledge to inform me of this topic. Would still love that, if not I guess I'll get Neem today and give it a shot and report my findings.
I'll spray it directly on the mycellium, fruiting bodies, contamination, and examine it over a week or two period, so I can gauge the effects on different stages / problems.

I had a bag or two that I have ditched outta my grow room for these problems so would be a great test subject.

BT or Pyrethrum would be much more effective against flies if that's what you're going for.

Should see my growing room brother! I've spent the past 9 months slowly studying gnats to cause their extinction when entering my premises.
This was just another idea that came to mind!
Brother, I have carnivorous plants, high airflow which I learnt stuns the gnats so severely they can't fly and will literally lie on the ground waiting for this "wind to pass" little do they know it never will, and because they're on the ground they're shredding themselves up to death walking through Diatomaceous earth literred everywhere in my grow room.
As you can see I'm trying to avoid any chemical sprays if possible, I have like 50 bug traps and two bug zappers ontop of this.

Has been a genocide haha, if I can use Neem oil ontop of this pests will never, ever be a problem again!

The BT ( bacillus thuringiensis) is for larval control not adults ,right?

Definitely, suprisingly enough I haven't used any bacilus strain. I know they are amazing, just trying to see what I can control without the use of external applications.
So far I have really controlled the buggers just with good airflow which restricts them to the ground and forces them through the DE which shreds them to death.
I have bought some Neem oil to see the effects for us mushrooms growers, if this is something for us to use I will report the effects on different stages of mushroom growth, from mycellial, to primordial, to eventual fruiting. I will report back the effects it has to you all.
If this is something us mushroom growers can use, it's an easy fix. If not we're restricted to maximizing airflow through fans and forcing the gnats into our diamotaceous earth as well as using a hand held bug zapper.
Will report back

I am using this on both mycorrhizal fungi and saprophytic fungi to see the results.

Apologies Drake, you are right.
Great suggestions, I actually used Pyrethrum on my plants today. So for mushrooms they are fine?
Would you suggest to use either before fruiting or during, or is both fine?

Beneficial bacteria used as a defense, should only be added to a casing mix.
The casing mix should be grown like mushrooms for 6-10 days.

Store in a fridge if made early.

----

If you add bacteria to the substrate it will work, but reduce BE.
The bacteria will consume nutrients needed.

I would just use it on an "as needed" basis.  You can apply pyrtherum or BT to the substrate if you're using pasteurized straw but that's a waste IMO.  I would spray the pyrethrum in a hand sprayer if you need to use it, and use the BT in your humidifier if you have the means to do so.

Neem oil takes a long time to wash off and it has a foul taste and odor. Seeing how the fruits develop over a few days, and the fact that people dont wash mushrooms of... I would imagine  your harvest would have a film of neem oil on them. Organic or not, gross.

I would not suggest using neem after pinning. It smell awful  :scat:
But I am very curious about the experiment though

I use clove oil in an evaporative humidifier and run an ozone generator between flushes to really knock the flies back. I've found removing any bags/blocks showing green immediately, regardless of age, solved about 90% of my fly problems.

Another thing is keeping your grow room cold.  If possible, 60f has kept the flies DowN to a non problematic level without full grow room deconstruction for months.  A lot of farmers I know have to shut down in august to do a big clean out.

DME only works when it's dry. Even then I think it is over rated. The only thing I have found "which shreds them to death." is 3000 psi of my pressure washer.... Every day - so even that does not work, but it keeps them manageable.

Unfortunately both pyrethrum and BTE are restricted in the UK.

Actually you are correct and it would appear I am talking rubbish about pyrethrum! I am sure there was an issue using it, but if not I am off to buy a bucket load!
