Tan growth on caps (pictures)
    #23616572 - 09/05/16 10:47 PM (7 years, 4 months ago)

Mutation or Contamination?
I set up 3 grow kits about a week ago. They looked like healthy pins in the beginning. However two days ago I noticed an odd brownish growth on top of a few caps (only in one kit). Originally I thought maybe they were mutants but today I noticed the same abnormal growth in the 2nd kit. So now I'm thinking it's some kind of contaminate. I'm so upset, I've grown two kits in the past and they both gave me three lucus yields, with zero issues. I've searched and searched and have found only one other post with similar growths but it had very few relies, none of which were helpful.

I've had that happen before but they all grew to maturity just fine, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Not sure whether it's caused by genetics, environment or contaminants, but in my experience it does seem to show up at the same time as brown blotching on the stipe in poor conditions. I've never been able to find a conclusive answer, I assume the brown patches are caused by verticillium or something, maybe the cap mutation could be caused by the same thing?

Yeah, that's nothing to be worried about. If you stick to growing long enough, you will see all kinds of strange shit and mangled shrooms. There's even cheerleader shrooms where they have this puffball on the cap.

Common on shrooms grown with too little fresh air and too high of humidity that keeps caps slimy wet.

Usually from suffocation bag fruiting chambers

Ah I see, I actually originally thought CO2 buildup could have been the cause. I did neglect them a bit over the weekend, only airing them out once a day rather than three or four times like I would normally. But I couldn't find anything online about it so I began to panic.
