Questions regarding cloning generations, culture age, and senescence
    #23616497 - 09/05/16 10:24 PM (7 years, 4 months ago)

I was looking further into cloning today and I came across the p-value/mycelium age discussions. It brought up some questions for me about cloning that I wasn't able to find a satisfactory answer for when searching.

1. If we should be dating our cultures by how many days they've spent unrefrigerated (as per RR's description, ex. 5 Jan 2016 - 21), is there an average limit of days until the mycelial culture is considered old or unproductive? (Better phrasing: how long do you typically hang on to your cultures?)

2. I'm having a hard time grasping the concept of generations of clones. So, genetically, mycelium/mushrooms degrade with each clone taken from a cloned grow, correct? If so, what are the symptoms of this senescence and how many generations of cloning can you get away with before they rear their ugly heads?

3. I'm given to understand also that taking a spore print from a cloned grow will reset the genetic pool and your next grow will no longer exhibit the traits cultivated from your clone. If you were to clone a fruit from three grows in a row, but then start the fourth grow with spores taken from a third-grow fruit, is the genetic degradation essentially rebooted? Will you see any issues from doing this?

(I apologize if my questions aren't particularly clear; I'm a little baked. :stoned: I realize that many of the answers to questions like how long a culture is good for are dependent on factors like the variety of mushroom and the care with which they have been handled; for today's purposes, I would just love to hear an average guess culture-wise for best-case scenario performance of the operator.)

1. Until it's unproductive. Depending on how you expand you can go unrefrigerated 3-6 months easily. Go back to masters and you can go a couple years on refrigerated shit

2. You can clone and clone from the clone grow until the wheels fall off. Like probably 3-4 grows

3. Yes then no
