the more you search, you will find what specs you are looking for and narrow from there

Yeah, I feel pretty set on the Asus brand, but trying to find the model that is gonna suit best is hard work. Their website is utter shite, then there's the slightly older models that aint listed there, and so on.
Plus, it's really hard to imagine what size I'll wanna go for. As long as it's got a 1TB HDD and isn't the size of a tablet or a briefcase I'll be happy, but I'll be damned if I can find a way to narrow all the models they do with just that 1TB feature down to compare them.
It's given me a bit of brainfuck, so I'm gonna have to revisit tomorrow night and go and do something a little easier on my brain for now, like solve some astrophysics problems...

Go to newegg or amazon and browse there?

Get an old thinkpad. I got a newer one (x1 carbon).
I recommend going on ebay and looking for a T420.
Thank me later.

I got a Lenovo a few months ago, it's a great laptop for what I want. Internet, minimal gaming, all the typical apps I might run like media players, etc. Don't know if Blue Ray capability is important to you or not but this one didn't have it (bummer for my X Files blue rays).
I've had a Toshiba (was fucking awesome, built like a tank, lived way longer than it should have after the treatment it received), a black Macbook (wimpy, still works but has some kind of damaged inverter/backlight problem with the monitor and is way too frustrating to DIY), and an HP cheapo which I wouldn't recommend.
That Toshiba was badass but it was pretty expensive. The Lenovo was just a plain old off-the-shelf unit type deal but has done nicely.

Bro I wish I honestly would have saved the cash and got an older thinkpad. But to save you time bro, the best overall old one to get is the T420. Go on Ebay and snatch one for like $150 and you have the best computer ever for super cheap.

Thanks guys, things are really hotting up on this one now! I knew my fellow Shroomerites would have some wicked ideas, and I really appreciate all your input.

I have a T530. Pretty solidly built but a couple things have broken on it, and they do this bullshit hardware lockout thing where you can't use a third-party battery ($30 vs $200 for their version) or a wifi card not on their whitelist. It's also incredibly heavy.
One plus is drive bays, you can get an adapter to put a 2.5" drive in the optical bay, and one of the PCI-e slots can take a mSATA SSD. Potentially you could have two mechanical drives plus a SSD.

I just switched to a new macbook. It's faster than any laptop I have ever had with windows. Kind of a bitch learning mac but I have an iPhone too so I can just search how to do anything I don't know how to do.

This is the laptop i am currently looking at. I'm not too overall impressed by asus tbh, but i've also never really owned one... They seem flimsy like the toshiba and hp's i've owned. I'd like something constructed from metal, but a lot of the onems i've looked at were expensive.
I'd really like something like http://www.abt.com/mobile/product_details.php?product_id=98862&Samsung-Iron-Silver-Notebook-9-Computer-NP900X5LK02US=&utm_source=google&utm_medium=sc&utm_campaign=NP900X5LK02US&camptype=cpcUSGooglePLA&kwid=productads-adid%5E95633593324-device%5Em-plaid%5E169455246484-sku%5E98862-adType%5EPLA
Anyway, you're gonna resell it anyway and just need it to run a browser and music right? get a netbook or something, they are cheap. A celeron processor these days could pretty well take care of your needs.
