Need some Laptop advice please (as in what to get)

So I'm gonna need to get myself a decent laptop in the next couple of months as I'll be a lot more mobile over the next year sorting out my move to Australia. Never really used a laptop and I'm kinda torn between going Macbook/Other.
1. I want something fucking reliable, for a start. 2. It's gonna need over 1tb of internal storage. 3. And finally, resale potential is my only other concern, as I'm only intending to be moving around for the next 6-10 months and will probably revert to a desktop asap.
That's my only criteria really. Decent keyboard layout would be a big plus as I'll mostly just use it for posting on the Shroomery and writing emails. Other than that it's just gonna get used for browsing, movies and music (I don't play games) so I don't need immense processing or graphics power, or even great speakers since I'll mostly be using external or headphones.
Portability is gonna be a big plus though; I don't want something big or heavy, but neither do I want something so delicate it'll snap in half the first time I put down my rucksack with it in (I tend to be a bit heavy-handed).
So...
Would anyone with experience in such matters kindly offer some advice? I guess the first step is to figure out if it's worth going down the Mac route (never have before), and then figuring out which brand is best if I don't and go with a Windows machine. I do kinda hate Windows, and would kinda dread going to 10, but at least I know the architecture well, and I'm not a massive fan of change or Mac. But I'm open to either.
Money isn't really an object, I'm happy to spend a little, but don't see the need to go super crazy since I won't be using it for anything intensive. Might it even be worth looking for something second hand? Seeing as I'll be selling it on again myself at some point anyway?
Any experience, advice, or pointers would be massively appreciated. I'll put in the time reading reviews and all and drilling down on the final model I decide on, but I'd really appreciate the advice of the gang here as my first step!!!

I like my Asus. Had it for almost 5 years now with no issues. Macbooks are overpriced garbage IMO. Amazing hardware, shitty software.
What are you going to be using this laptop for mainly besides animal porn and nascar?

I am a windows person myself; but anything branded Apple holds it's value remarkably well... If resale were my top priority, I would probably buy a used -but current- Macbook, there are lots of fanboys to buy up your used Mac when the time comes.
If I were buying a laptop for myself, I would get a Lenovo, IME they take a beating.. Not sure about resale though...

Cool, so that's two shouts for Asus already, which is reassuring as I've used their motherboards in my builds since forever and have always been impressed. Thanks guys.
Is the Mac software really that shit? I mean, I fucking hate the iPhone interface, but Macbook users always seem to rave about them.
Scat and snuff porn, in answer to your question Van...

if you have been using windows with zero mac experience, you are going to be in for a pretty steep learning curve.

Mmmmm, yeah, I hear ya man. I'm a techy and a fast learner anyway so I'm not massively worried about that - more just worried about hating the interface.
Just looking at the Asus website, anyone have any experience with a particular series in their lineup?
The Zenbooks looks pretty sweet, maybe a bit annoyingly small and delicate though. Unsure about the rest....

I would think the iPhone and Mac experiences would have a lot of similarities. I prefer windows, barely... iOS is based on UNIX, and actually quite powerful for the talented coder. That isn't me though...

Asus makes quality stuff. They're the number one brand I'd recommend. As for what to get, it all really just depends on what you want it to do. If you're looking for a decent gaming laptop, prepare to spend quite a bit and you'll need to do some research. If you're just looking for general computing, I'd say pretty much anything with a i3+ and whatever HDD size you need would be good enough.
When it comes to resale, I really dunno how well any of them hold their value. I generally don't sell my computers. I run them until they're dead and replace them with a couple of upgrades in between.
I just recently got my first laptop it's an HP with Windows 10. Definitely wouldn't be my main computer but it serves the purpose I have for it (drawing up 3d models to work off of) and general browsing while I'm working. It's nothing fancy at all. It actually came from Walmart, not my go to when it comes to computers but it was a gift and I'm happy with it.
--------------------
With my face against the floor I can’t see who knocked me out of the way. I don’t want to get back up but I have to so it might as well be today. Nothing appeals to me no one feels like me, I’m too busy being calm to disappear. I’m in no shape to be alone contrary to the shit that you might hear. You can't wake up, this is not a dream. You're part of a machine, you are not a human being With your face all made up, living on a screen. Low on self esteem, so you run on gasoline

That's good to know, I was just reading a review of one and it sounded alright...
@Shroomslip - Thanks man, yeah, just general computing. And the scat and snuff porn of course. Need as big an HDD as possible for my collection.

Lenovos are good, though their quality has, imo gone down. I have a thinkpad that's a couple years old for my work pc. Seems to be a workhorse. I haven't tried any of lenovo's newer machines yet, so I can't speak for them. This one still was given to me with Windows 7 still installed, so it's obviously a couple years older.
My personal machine is a dell inspiron 15 7000 series, I've got to say, it's pretty dern sleek, the graphics are great - no optical disk drive(I don't use CDs so it's not a problem), 1 TB SSD, 8 GB RAM with the ability to double it if you want to upgrade. I'm happy with it, it's one of those '2 in 1's so it has a tablet mode and it's touchscreen if need be. It feels like a mac in terms of sleekness and design, honestly, with the customization of dell and it's about 800 dollars new as opposed to 1k+.

A newer dell would probably suit you. Plus if you dont like windows 10 you could always revert to whatever you are used to the most.

I used to work with Lenovo's & Toshiba's when I was in laptop repair, and if the quality of the former has gone down I'll steer well clear. How long have you had the Dell PB? I've always found they age really badly (have always had them for work machines and used to work with their servers all the time).
It sounds like Asus is getting the votes all round, am trying to peruse their line up on their website but it's pretty shit...

Not long at all lol. I am fairly terrible to my personal computers though. If a hot beverage doesn't kill them then getting slammed around during travel does. I think my main gripe with Dell would also be durability, tbh. Really should have one of those laptops you can drop from a three story window without killing or just a desktop work station.
Since this one can basically just stay at my apartment or maybe the odd coffee shop/bar here or there if I feel like taking it out for a jaunt and working I'm determined to keep it in good condition as long as I can - so we'll see how it works.
