BSOY2 Grow
    #23614861 - 09/05/16 01:44 PM (7 years, 4 months ago)

Alrighty folks when I get home from work I will put 3 bags into fruiting- 1 pine 2 oak (the other pine already went into fruiting because of hella primordia- my GH wasn't dialed in though so theft units were light and poor quality). I'll keep this thread updated.

Working as intended, Nice! Is that branched or splitting?

Branched - Multiples of fruit formations from a single base.
Splitting - More or less making twins, or dividing.

look like 10lb sawdust blocks? ...thinking of going bigger, your yields may impact my decision!

Actually just followed Lipa's Tek to make 5lbs bags, however I spawned these out of a grain bag (about 5lbs itself) and the spawn ratio was a bit larger than expected. Maybe about 7lbs. I also only cut holes on the from half of these blocks- next run I will do all around to compare yields. Also one pictured is pine to compare to the oak (had another pine but it had major primordia early so I fruited- but my GH wasn't dialed in and was practically a loss). Now I just need a scale to weigh yields. Never got one back in my active days for legal reasons but now that I solely run edible/medicinal I see no reason not to get a big, good one.

Growing strong! Looks good. I like this stain because it grows well on many substrates and tolerates a wide temperature range. Cool to see that it likes pine! GJ

So far other than initial colonization time I see no difference between pine and oak. Will have to wait to get the weight to be sure though.

Thanks JanuaryWolf! It's looking like the avoidance of pine has been overblown. And I can't thank y'all enough for the vent out- it has made worlds of difference in FAE and in how humid my bedroom is,

I must say coming home after 10 hours at work to see these guys bursting brings so much pride and love to my heart. God I love mycology.

Tad more FAE needed?

I unzipped one side of the GH, considering cutting holes in the sides- but keeping rh fluctuations in mind. When my intake fan was still going high speed (something happened to it, I now have to start it like an old prop plane) this didn't seem to be an issue. But right now I'm hovering around 100 rh, not what it usually maintains at (87-95% is its usual area) but it is difficult with my long work hours to keep it that high as my humidibucket runs out of water often. Currently dreaming up a hamster cage-like apparatus that can siphon water down when it reaches a certain point to ensure this stops happening. If it does work that way then I can see about using my timer to get controlled fluctuations of 80-95%, giving a little more room for evaporation than I am now.

King oyster will also eat pine, both strong strains in the oyster species.
Given up on Gold, to weak for my liking. Got more strains to test.

I agree pine should not be avoided, but tested first.

Opened the other zipper- still looks like they need more FAE. rh holding strong.

First real noticeable difference. 1st bag is pine. Smaller, better formed fruits. The other two, oak, have larger more squirrelly fruits. This could be accounted for by micro climates in the GH though so I will have to do more runs and see if it is positioning, or if pine really might be better for BSOY2. This is exciting stuff.

Thanks y'all! I'm pretty proud of this batch! Can't wait to do another run to see if it really does prefer pine or whether that is a sweet spot in the GH.

Final pics from this flush

Final observations: Apparently while I was gone the modulation of the zippers ended up providing sufficient FAE and made up for earlier, overly stemmy fruits, and the oak bags ended up looking just as pretty as the pine. Which leads me to this: even accounting for the fruits I harvested before work and the amount of growth they would have had- the pine bag just had smaller fruits, and more of them oddly enough. They sure were pretty, but the oak really shown through yield wise in the home stretch. While I don't have a scale- it was a sizable, notable difference.

Moral of the story here I think is pine is fine, but go for broke and spawn into oak.

I will be running a few more of these experiments, hopefully with a scale and a spreadsheet next time, to truly track the differences, as I plan to continue to do with Maitake. If you can't find cheap hardwood, the pine pellets available at most feed stores is still a great way to cultivate.
