rehydrating grains before spawning?
    #23614624 - 09/05/16 12:14 PM (7 years, 4 months ago)

I did this with my first monos and had bacterial contamination in all of them. This could have been caused by other factors, but dunking my grains added alot more water to a substrate that was already on the wet side. If i try it again, i'll use a fresh jug of water from the supermarket. Would the ph in distilled water screw things up?

Rehydrating grains is not necessary.

Or make your sub on the dry side. You also have to make sure that you strain the grains very well

Or just have clean spawn.

My spawn hasn't been showing any signs of contamination. It usually colonizes pretty fast, and smells fresh at spawning. I've been OCD about sanitation up to the point of spawning. I think its been caused by too much water; from starting with wetter substrate, and then failing to drain the grains enough

Just because bacteria isn't obvious doesn't mean you don't have a bacterial problem.  Generally bacteria is 100% invisible and you won't even notice until the mycelium around it shows you it has a problem with it.  When it does you'll notice yellow metabolites, or cloudy, puffy, and sometimes cottage cheese looking aerial mycelium.

Lots of people with bacteria in their spawn will deny it to the day they die.  It still doesn't dispute the fact that their spawn was bacterial.  Don't be that guy.

That would make sense. All of the tubs that went bacterial were started from the same agar plate. I'll try to spawn the last jar of that ms project in a tray.

I hope you get clean plates. On the bottom I wrote up how it should look before inoculating grain jars
