Would this work to sterilize a room
    #23614334 - 09/05/16 10:28 AM (7 years, 4 months ago)

So, lately I've been having an issue with contaminants. I didn't even have this issue when I very first started growing so idk what is going on! I am winding if I could put a mixture of bleach water inside of a humidifier and let it put in work for a day. Move it to each corner of the room every few hours so I know it is getting everything. Air, walls, surfaces, carpet, etc. what do you guys think? Would this idea have the potential to work?

If you have contamination issues, you need to work on clean spawn and not a clean room.

Nothing is going to sterilize an entire room.  Just get a still air box dude.  Spray some alcohol inside, let it settle, then use it to inoculate stuff in.  Don't over complicate things.

what point of the cycle do you have contam issues??
each stage has its own variables..

(my setup)
i have jars colonizing in a china hutch in my kitchen.
i do my SAB work in my damp dark basement with cat boxes.
i fruit in a closet in a spare bedroom using tubs.

My house is hardly the cleanest one on the block and i have four cats.
havent had a contam since i started back up.

my old setup was in a spotlessly clean house and i inoculated jars in a
bleached out bathroom. had contams all the time because i came to find out
'incubating' jars in the high 80s BREEDS contams.

Agar clean, jars clean, CVG procedure good. I'm assuming it's something in the room when it's trying to colonize.

I do all my work out of a SAB, so that's a false assumption.

It's got to be the open air spawning from my grain to CVG, or it's a contam in the room that gets a foothold when it's trying to colonize.

I'm baffled because I haven't had this issue even when I first started, but now it's a reoccurring issue. I'm not doing MS or print, all my jars are clean, all agar clean, so it's either spawning or something in the room. I haven't changed any of my procedures from when I first started so I'm curious as to where it is coming from.

I'm willing to bet that your spawn isn't as clean as you think.

I inspect each jar, and never have any discoloration, bizarre growth, etc. if there is bacteria, then that's one thing...but I'm getting green in my tubs. I'm assuming penicillin? I'm sure I would see that in my jars. First, most likely the jars would stall or move incredibly slow, but they are fully colonized in about 9-10 days I would say. But then if by chance they happened to fully colonize, I'm sure the contam would show itself while consolidating...or so I would think. Then, on top of that, I smell my jars before I give the grains a soak and they all smell like that shroomy goodness.

:frown: I always feel so sad when people hit the contam wall. Sucks so much ass eh? All you gotta do tho is work and work and work and work on figuring it out. It's almost always a BACTERIAL spawn problem, but sometimes it can be the brand of coir having seeds in it. Also agar could be dirty too. There's lots of hidden contams.

Bacterial spawn means the myc is weakened, and when the myc is weakened, the trich LOVES to germinate on it. Yes it's coming from the environment, but the underlying issue that needs addressing is the bacterial spawn.

Bacteria can be hard to spot. It also can be odorless. Some bacteria grows incredibly fast. If you are having major contamination issues you might want to start some new growth on agar and stop working with whatever your working with now. You know the drill. Make a few careful transfers and use a clean wedge to knock up a couple jars. If your confident it's clean (not thick looking or otherwise off) expand that and the spawn to bulk. I think you'll find that your problems will go away.

Grain prepped in accordance with RR's grain prep (I add liquid coffee)
Inoculation happens in SAB
Jars are equipped with SFDs.
Jars go on top of my SAB when I'm done inoculating
CVG is prepped in accordance with spitballs "how spitball does CVG"
Open air spawn the fully colonized and consolidated jars into prepped CVG into a 66 qt mono (bottom holes tightly stuffed...probably couldn't get any tighter. Top holes loose)
Lid goes on top and doesn't come off until fully colonized.

Also I go straight into fruiting conditions...always have.

I know I'm not explaining all the steps, but I know you guys get what I'm saying. I make sure the mono is wiped down prior to spawning also. It's got to be the open air spawning or during the colonization...that's what makes me think there's a contam in the room. So I figured maybe I might be able to sanitize the room just like we do for our SAB. That way, when I open air spawn, there's less chance to get a contam during spawning or colonizing.

I had this problem last year in another place.  Turns out the spawn I was buying had some very serious endospore problem.  Even PCING that nasty shit and being very sterile ended in almost 100% failure.  I lost at least 20 jars before tossing that shit out and going with a new brand.

Haven't had any problems like that since.

Exactly. The bacteria is what gives the green it's chance. Trust me, it's not coming from outside, but within.

I use pasty plates for my agar, and I add food coloring and never see the contams. I have been using the same agar recipe for a while, which in theory could cause the myc. to get used to it and not colonize as quickly, but it always fully colonized. The coir is the same as I have always used and no change in the method. Ummm, I'm trying to think of what it could be. I smell all my jars before spawning and there's never a sweet or bitter smell. I just don't know. And it sucks because I've got a quota to meet lol.

Myc can grow right over a contam on your plates. It's possible to never see the bacteria. If your getting trich, that is all the proof you need that bacteria is present. Not being a dick or anything, but all you can rationally do is start over with new plates.

I rinse my grains at least 5 times with hot water, soak for 24 hours in order to make sure that the endoscopes germinate so they can get killed during PC. But just in case PCing isn't enough, after my soak, I do a 20 minute boil. 1, so it kills everything, and 2, so the water steam evaporates before loading into the jars.

I'm about to scratch everything that I have, start back over with MS to agar, clean the shit out of all my tubs (maybe even buy new ones) and pull everything out of the room and clean the shit out of it!!

I know everybody says that the holes can't be stuffed too tight, but what if that is the case? Stagnant air, or standing water because it's unable to evaporate?

Yes! don't worry about cleaning the tubs or room. All you need are new clean plates. The rest will be fine if you have clean spawn.

1.  Your methods never kill -everything-.  It's always reasonable to assume that your spawn has -some- kind of bacteria in it 100% of the time.  It's impossible to remove it all.  It's just a question to what degree and what types.

2.  See #1.

Trust me man.  It doesn't matter, bacteria can fuse with your Myc and ride it unnoticed too from  culture to culture.  Sometimes it happens.

what brand/kind of spawn??

too OP...

damn that sucks.. you seem to know your shit.. i also noticed i always had issues
when i had or thought i had a 'quota' my best grows happened when it was relaxed
and casual and had the time to work out problems but that contam wall is enough to
kill your muse. hope you can identify a common denominator:thumbup:

Holes can definitely be stuffed too tight. But not because this will cause contams but because it will decrease FAE exchange which causes all sorts of growth problems. Experiment a little with it. I have found that the bottom should not be stuffed really tight and the top even less so.
