How's my setup? (fruiting)
    #23614103 - 09/05/16 08:36 AM (7 years, 4 months ago)

How does this look? It's pretty wet everywhere in the tub. Is it possible to get too wet? Alsi, is it okay for the light to be that close? This is my first time So I'll take any help. Thank you!

The light is fine. It's not too wet, but you need holes in the bottom of the tub if you don't have them. Also need to elevate the tube to allow the holes in the bottom to work.

It does have holes and it is elevated.

If you want to get it closer and the heat it puts off does not become an issue, feel free.

Also, you might want to position the FC more in the center of the space. Looks like it's in a closet, so the air in there is probably stale to begin with, but the extra space around the sides may improve FAE within the FC.

Great idea. Would it be benefitial to leave the closet door open for more air flow? It happens to be right next to the toilet though, so I'm not sure if that's a risk for contams or not.

Sure, assuming you let the cakes colonize to 100% and then allowed them adequate time to consolidate, they should be fine.

If you must have it in a closet definitely leave the door open. The more room it has on all sides the better it will function.

I don't necessarily have to have it in the closet; I just have no clue where else would be a good location for the whole setup. Thank you both for your help.

thats not a bad setup ! looks like you paid attention to the teks:thumbup:

if you must leave it in the closet, try to put it in the center and grab a tiny
usb powered desk fan. at target for cheap! dont point it at the tub just in the closet somewhere to keep up the air flow.. do not point it at the sgfc!

id also remove some of those chemicals. something about coolant next too
a tub of mushies gives me the creeps :p

Good idea for the fan. Thanks! I haven't actually looked up any tek. I don't know what that is. Haha

TEK = Technique; usually referring to a technique used in the cultivation process. For example preparing your grains, agar recipes, subs...etc

If it's in a closet or walk in wardrobe leave the door open for fresh oyxgen to penetrate the tub and shroomies. Your setup looks fine and a place with good air flow, roughly room temp, low traffic and clean is generally good. I wouldn't leave them next to a draft such as directly in front of an open window and if you are using a fan do not point it directly on the tub or it will dry very quickly

Awesome job I like how it looks  very tidy

Thank you! I actually already have 2 mushrooms growing and it's only been 48 hours! Very exciting.

And oh, haha, makes sense. I haven't followed any technique directly. Just kind of doing my thing.
But one variable I don't know is how much to spray. How many sprays do you do? I try to do it from each side and evenly get all cakes, but it ends up being about 16 sprays to get it all evenly. I feel like this may be too much, what's your guys' take?

Put a hygrometer in there, RH should be around 80%, you should spray enough to have small water droplets on the cakes. That's the key

There is some debate as to whether a hygrometer is truly necessary. However, OP seems to already have a hygrometer in place.

Never use a fan with a SGFC. Guaranteed to dry it the fuck out.

:facepalm3:

even a mini one? just to move air around? or does that defeat the purpose
of using the sgfc?

The SGFC is capable of handling FAE on it's own, by design.

Quote:

RogerRabbit
The physics of the shotgun terrarium are that evaporation causes a temperature drop, thus the air molecules are closer together.  This results in higher pressure within the air spaces around the perlite.

The substrates and/or lights provide slight heating within the body of the terrarium.  This results in relatively lower pressure.  This low pressure area above the perlite(high pressure) results in airflow to balance the pressure.  This in turn leads to more evaporation from the perlite, continuing the process.  This is why a shotgun terrarium handles FAE automatically.

The CO2 does not settle to the bottom.  In addition, the CO2 from mushrooms is mixed thoroughly into the O2, thus it travels out through the holes in the sides and top as part of the natural circulation.  It doesn't enter the denser air within the perlite and spill out the bottom.

i suggested the idea of a fan cause OP said it was in a closed closet...
and said twice to not point it at the sgfc...

but let me just run backwards threw a cactus field instead

for i have been owned.

SGFC work off of natural room currents. A fan is too much, in a confined space like a closet it would be really too much.

Thank you all for your help. Since I'm working with a small space, I remove my fc and put it on my bathroom counter to mist/fan. I know it's not suggested, but is it truly a necessary precaution? I feel like people are a little too cautious.

To answer your earlier question, lightly mist your cakes until beads of water appear on the surface.  Then fan it with the lid a bit if you so choose (not required).  I also mist over the perlite a few times and the walls of my chamber lightly.

When the surface of the cake is dry, repeat.

Also a hygrometer isn't necessary.  It'll just confuse you really.  A proper SGFC will rise and fall in humidity which will aid in the evaporation process, but keep the humidity up enough to thrive.  It's like a nice country road of hills and valleys.

Not understanding your last statement.  Why would you mist in the bathroom?

Haha. Sorry. My closet is the linen closet of my bathroom, so the counter is right there. I can't effectively spray my tub without moving it, so do uou think it's fine moving it to the counter multiple times a day. I'm not sure if it is necessary GOT to move the box. Thank you.

Moving it isn't gonna hurt anything.  Just seems kinda cumbersome.  Might be better to just find a spot where you can access it easily and leave it there.

Personally I would not move my tubs that often, I think it stresses the mycelium, leaves bruising and more prone to contaminants. Its better to just plan out in the future and find a good place in your home where parameters are similar to the tropical species needs

I transformed my old storage room into a lab and split that lab into two, one side for sterile, the other for growing. That's for the winter and in the summer I spawn to bulk in my sister's old room

Just leave the door open in that closet and let the SGFC do the rest
