Peaceful is the one who's not concerned with having more or less. ~ Rumi

Sure, but with that attitude he will never get the great job, nice house, hot wife and so forth - but he will certainly be peaceful - while panhandling.

Do a nice house, good job, hot wife, ensure peace though?
I have met drifters, roaming for 20 years with little possessions that were happy and living well by their choice of standards.

Lousy example. Have you looked at the report? The report is  full of ambiguity. One of Jeffery Sachs
heroes has to be Hari Seldon. Economic professors publishing Psycho-sociology isn't science, just because it has numbers in it doesn't mean thing.

Yeah I bet that report is horseshit. 'Normal' people are brought happiness by big houses, big TV's, hot wives, etc.

Last I checked, I'm pretty damn far from normal, as I bet most people that used this forum are.

When you've visited the ethereal realms of psychedelics a bunch of times in your life, you begin to realise that most of what the world thinks, likes and does is absolutely fucking retarded.

I'm with nuentoter on this one.

Peaceful is the one who's not concerned with having more or less. ~ Rumi

Content with what you have. Not using another as the measuring stick to your own personal life.

Some people may be happy with the marble floors mansion, the Ferrari, hot wife that loves sticking Dick. Not saying those things aren't awesome. But the lifestyle has little appeal to me. Would i like a mansion? It'd b cool for awhile I bet, but no, I prefer something less showy, somewhere that I'm not afraid to let my kids run in and spill shit and break things. Somewhere I can clean easily, without hirelings, I can do my own landscaping and lawn care. I don't want a Ferrari, I want an 80's beat up pick up truck that I don't care if i bring in the woods and scratch up. Do I want the hot wife that craves Dick flavor? Probably fun for awhile, but I would prefer someone I can make a true emotional connection with, that shares my morals isn't complacently accepting of whatever I say. I want the strife, the small argument, these are challenge, signs of humanity.

I feel bad in a way for the one who does believe money buys happiness, that happiness is real but shallow and doesn't come from within, it is laid out on the surface like a fresh paint job on a broken car, looks nice in the driveway but gets you no where.

I don't know. Money buys a waver runner. No one can be not happy on one of those. Having nice things are just nice things. Everyone would love to live and spend more money in day then thet make in a year. As for the sexy times with the hot wife vs the ugly women? Doesn't matter the hotter the women the more effort you have to make. There are happy memories but in the moments of life there is no real happiness.

<--- gets the joke

FYI not wanting something does not preclude one from getting that something

i dont want to be sick but sometimes i get sick

unless you buy into "the secret" that in order to get something you have to really want that something
then I don't know what to tell ya

Not striving or desiring = stagnation. That is not a human's (nor any other creature's) lot in life.

I think a quote by Morris Berman is apropos:

Quote:

I saw Americans as being miserable because they had bought into a definition of success called the American Dream, which consisted of hustling, competing, getting ahead, and pursuing wealth or fame.  And I knew that real success was a very different thing: it consisted in the relationship you had with yourself.  As John Ruskin once put it, "There is no wealth but life."  If you let yourself be defined from the outside, it will eventually make you sick.  Unfortunately, this is what most Americans have chosen to do.

There is nothing in that quotation that precludes making a living and having some money.  It points out the emptiness in the insatiable drive to acquire excesses of money and fame.

Education/mating/job hunting/promotions; etc., ALL require competition. There is no way around that.
