SPAWN BAGS ripping apart after sterilization

Hey there guys and gals,
I had a tragic incident after 3.5 hours of pressure cooking today when i went to remove my two spawn bags (~10 quarts) which appeared in tact and then tore apart after having stuck to the side of my pressure cooker. I don't want to sound like a dumbass here but does anyone have a techniques to avoid this? I am using a 16 quart presto canner and kind of just stuck the bags in.
I think it may have been overloaded the BUT i dont want this to happen tomorrow when i sterilize some smaller bags for my morel grow. I may just switch over to my familiar jar method.
thanks

Those thin presto PC are bad for melting bags. Be sure it's not touching the sides. Load them less full and use rings or plates or whatever to keep that from happening. Or get an AA and never look back.

Search around, you might find a deal. They are expensive but they last forever. I am not as familiar with the PC models cause I use a sterilizer myself. But AA is quality.

I've only had them stick/melt to the sides when I almost ran out of water once, in my presto 22qt. But I use a electric range, maybe gas gets the sides hotter.

that could be the issue but the rocker was going the whole time. It slowed up at the end though and it was looking pretty dry when i opened it later

So you have an autoclave? Or what's your sterilizer unit? Just curious

how long do you typically sterilize them? i went 3.5 but feel like that may be over kill. I have read that 2 works fine for some people. I just dont think these prestos are designed to run for more than 2 or 2.5. I raised the rack with jar lids and at least doubled the amount of water you are supposed to use in fear that i may run out. And i still likely ran out or was damn close to being out

Yea use more water next time, and don't get the rocker going so hard you'll never make it without going dry on a 3 hour bag run. I do 2.5 hours on my small bags no problems. If there isn't enough water to absorb some of the heat then the sides get too hot.

for what it's worth my AA also melted some bags when I almost ran out of water too. You can fill the water up to a few inches under your filter patches if you need to. But you'll save a lot of water if you don't let the rocker go wild during the run. It doesn't matter what the gauge says, if the rocker is barely moving around and hissing a little you are fine.
