Russula something
    #23612816 - 09/04/16 09:23 PM (7 years, 4 months ago)

I know there are alot of red russulas, i think this one may be  xerampelina or perhaps persicina. I found this russula in new mexico, about 10,000 ft high at the santa fe ski basin. Growing amungst ponderosa and aspen.

The gills are white when fresh, now a bit cream. Seem to have the typical russula pattern. Not attached to stem.

Stem is 4cm long 2cm wide. Smooth white

Cap is a nice cooked lobster red color. Caps flat, sunken in center. Some have raised edges

Spore print color is a orange/yellow. Kinda golden.

No bruising

The taste of this mushroom is important i think, it starts off with no flavor but as you chew a small piece by the tip of your tounge it is SPICY. Or perhaps just a burning sencation.

It's definitely *not* R. xerampelina or any of the other Xerampelinae. Those species bruise yellow then slowly brown, and they will have a strong fishy odor as they dry. They will also not have a hot pepper sort of taste.

Which Russula you have will require the use of a microscope and several chemical reagents to make an accurate ID. The easy version is that species with a hot pepper taste shouldn't be eaten. Russula is a large genus with something near 800 species, and they are notoriously difficult to tell apart.

Happy mushrooming!
