Those are some great books, however PIHKAL and TIHKAL might be more suitable for you if you actually are a chemist as it doesn't really describe the experiences to the core like the other books. Much more of an overview of symptoms that are followed by an recipe for the synthesis of the compound.
I suggest first read DMT the spirit molecule, since many people over the web spread some myths about DMT that aren't really accurate and reading that book can help you distinguish fact from fiction over arguably most profound psychedelic experience a human can experience.
Overall make sure if you do decide to use psychedelics because of these books that you listen to the advice they give, and use them responsibly as a serious psychedelic experience is no joke.

The Spirit Molecule is trash.
I recommend "The Joyous Cosmology: Adventures in the Chemistry of Consciousness" by Alan Watts

I'm just now considering both. Could you please elaborate a little more?
What makes the Spirit molecule trash? Is it badly written? Is the message not credible? What's the general problem?
What was your take on the Joyous Cosmology, and what made it shine?
Thanx very much

Those two books don't just consist of those "overview[s] of symptoms that are followed by an recipe for the synthesis of the compound", it's just that only those sections were made available for free on the internet. The actual books contain much lengthier essays on a variety of topics, many of them focused on personal aspects of the psychedelic experience (plus a lot of biographical material on the Shulgins, writings on drug law, the occurrence of interesting compounds in nature, etc.) It's worth buying the actual books IMO, even if the chemistry-focused "Book II" part of each is of no interest to you.

I really enjoyed The Cosmic Serpent by Jeremy Narby. Focuses on DMT and it's potential role in the origins and transfer of knowledge, including shamans claims that they learned about Ayahuasca from "plant spirits". Really interesting shit.
