Are grow kits really that bad?...

So my grow kit gives me 40-60gs of dried shrooms. Where I am from that would cost me around £400-£600 (being bought gram by gram, there are no bulk dealers) which is around $550-$800, and the kit would cost me £40.
That would last me around a year..
Is it really that much better to buy a whole set up to be used once a year and requiring much more effort and potential to go wrong?
I get that obviously doing it yourself is more efficient but a grow kit is hardly "useless" and in some scenarios makes more sense. I can do it the proper way but for me this is better.

they are not good.
most come with goofy pumps and overpriced gloves.
if you just want enough for that usage level. look up the pf tek+SGFC and use a food dehydrator.save yourself the money and get the satisfaction of creating your own with things you built.

My first post and thread was a grow kit here it is https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/23229771/page/7 I started with one got a good amount of mushrooms, but once joining this site I learned the Pf tek and was easily constructing my own cakes with great success for a fraction of the price. Basically they are good with out the shit like air pumps but sterile bag of grains if you don't want to invest in a PC grains etc but in the long run its better to learn a thing or two and do it yourself then your not limited to the kits contents Also I notice your in UK as am I if you need any UK based knowledge I.e. where to obtain things equipment etc give me a shout via pm also my total cost including PC is under £50 and I can make way more than 600g of mushrooms as many times as I like Also I told you all this on your last thread if I were you I'd try get all your money back and do it yourself its really fun and give you a great feeling of satisfaction

The smallest amount of research will allow you to build the grow kit yourself for about a third of the price.
Not to mention that you're probably going to wind up with a much better set up and also better yields.

I don't think grow kits include agar and the transfers. I started 4 months ago with some mason jars bought at the store i work at and learned the hard way with supplies but the knowledge will last a long time and im still learning.

If you're interested in using a grow kit to grow, then you're not actually interested in "cultivation" though are you? Since this is a cultivation forum, we like to talk about cultivation. Talking about grow kits here is like talking about peel-off temp tattoos at a tattoo artists forum, or suggesting just buying fast food on a cooking forum.
If you're interested in getting high, are grow kits that bad? Not at all.
If you're interested in cultivation, are grow kits that bad? Yes, they killed my family, kicked my dog, and burned my house down. They are the worst.

Best part about growing yourself is when you realize it's actually a lot of fun. Most people start here growing to get some shrooms. They keep growing, expand into edibles and medicinal cause they wind up loving the hobby.

Yea Ive never had one but the photos I see look pretty decent.
I agree with what PastyWhyte said though- this hobby is wicked fun. You wont regret learning to grow.
If you do get a grow kit, take plenty of clean spore prints and use the SHroomery as a resource to learn what to do with them!

Definitely....that’s what happened in my case....working on an old wood chipper now to see if I can get it running...so I don’t have to buy wood chips...trying to get my materials around to start a ganoderma grow....cloned a wild specimen I found and want to grow a monotub of them

I just bought a used wood chipper from a yard sale site.. Haven't used it for wood yet been using it to cut up bales of straw right now for oysters.. I love it only takes a few minutes to chop an entire bale.

I figured having a woodchipper would come in handy.....plus I have 25 acres of trees I'm trimming up for my boss anyway.....all I’d have to do is chip a huge pile and use as needed.....
