Growing the rare Tarragon Oyster
#23611616 - 09/04/16 02:37 PM (7 years, 4 months ago) |
|
|
Starting a new section for when my rare Tarragon Oyster (Pleurotus Eunosmus) vendor dowels arrive.

----
Firstly it will colonize and fruit at room temperature, with no cold shock required. As with all oysters, it likes hardwoods, paper, straw and so on.
It is a fast colonizer, taking only 7-14 days to complete. Standard fruit cropping for an oyster strain.
Not very attractive to flying insects. Unique flavour and smell.
----
I will be starting with expanding the vendor dowels to a WL Tek spawn run. Then after I will expand to a fruiting sized WL Tek substrate.
Updates coming soon.

Looks like a regular oyster to me is it just native to Europe? Tastes like tarragon? P. serotinus is the one that's actually greenish/orange I think, but supposedly not choice edible.

It grows in the UK only, not Europe. It tastes and smells like Tarragon. Its related to Golden oyster, its a tuber branching type.

Contacted the supplier. They won't ship to U.S. if anyone else was interested. Tarragon Oyster sounded pretty cool to me.

I have contacted a UK trader who also operates on ebay, on everyone's behalf. They use wild bird seeds which will be perfect for genetic variation.
I will notify you if they take on the strains.

Got my dowel spawn today, I am also verifying the high quality vendor. So well packaged, even comes with instructions and fact sheets.

Off to make a spawn substrate, and inoculate.

Nice looking set of plugs! You can just transfer bits of mycelium to agar. Refrigerate the plugs and use as master for a looong time.

Yes they are very good. High quality dowels, packaging and service, low prices. The fact sheets and instruction manual are detailed and include images.
They also offer grain and sawdust spawn, on demand.

Under a lens I can see the Tarragon dowel has come into action. Slightly stronger than its brother variant Golden oyster.
24 hours response using the standard WL Tek. Images soon, in about 3-4 days.

So here it is after 48 hours, on the WL Tek, 100% dark at 25°C.

Thick, fast and white. WL Tek wins again. Side note, dowels work fine.

Yay science!
I'd really like to see how colonized grain does on WL as well. That strain looks bumpin'! Can't wait to do my own! Think I'm going to cut the dowels a few times and drop most to agar and one to a grain jar.

Test results so far are good on plant fiber as a carbon source. Next test, add more carbons via plant resins.

So plant fiber is complex and requires energy to breakdown, to receive more carbon.
Been doing some research on tea leaves as a carbon source. Managed to find this, which is testing on used tea.
I will be testing unused tea energy, carbon. Starting at 25% tea leaves to WL Tek.
I also have 50/50 pine to test.
----
Failing all test's I will have to transfer to wild bird seed. The WBS will act as the primary carbon source.

So I ordered Tarragon and Summer oyster spawn.

Visible growth is so far 4x stronger than my Golden oyster grows.

Ok guys going to have to start again, but unfortunately not until the weekend. Got an infection from probably Golden oyster spores, see my post here.
Anyway the result is still positive, one potent substrate. Can grow spores, spawn and tissue samples.

Decided to do Pastywhyte's heavy spawn ratio using the new T-Tek.
Still doing open air assembly, any mold will be destroyed. Any detached mycelium will grow out like spores.

This is 120g of vendor grain spawn.

Unfortunately my room temperature has dropped down to 20°C. However here is 24 hours fully dark, using the new T-Tek.

Detached mycelium growing as expected.

Anyway the result is still positive, one potent substrate. Can grow spores, spawn and tissue samples.
This is the first time I've self quoted :P

Here is day 2 at 20°C. Strong and also fast, faster than Golden and King, but not as aggressive as Summer.

The detached mycelium continue to grow and gain in strength.

Hi, I search at the vendor's website but i don't find information about the fructification temperature of Tarragon Oyster. I just find this: "Produces bi-annually in spring and summer". Tarragon Oyster have the same temperature range than Pl. ostreatus or prefers warmer temperature? Do you have more informations?

You can find the info in the Shroomery database for oysters here. Top of this page are drop down menus, Mushroom Info.
Colonization: 21-27°C. Primordia: 18-24°C. Fruits: 21-27°C.

Here is day 3. I can now see some genetic variation in the out growth, still its a very impressive speed for 20°C.

No signs of any common type of mold, no obvious metabolites either.

Here is day 4, at 20°C fully dark. Personally I prefer the grow up style, it grows much stronger than mixed spawn.

Nothing bad to report, still clean of mold and metabolites.

Here is day 5, at 20°C fully dark. I'd say its about 75% colonized, however it requires consolidation, potent substrate.

No mold, no metabolites, no bacterial avoidance, no toughened or armored strands.

Got more vendor grain spawn, mixed and ready to rumble.

Leaving it to colonize, fully dark.

Here is day 6 of Tarragon oyster on T-Tek. No lid modifications, no mold. Time to consolidate for 6-8 days.

T-Tek working as intended, growth much stronger than expected, no bacteria. Tarragon oyster fruits very soon, undecided which style to use.

Looks like consolidation is not going to take as much time as I first thought. Closer to 6 days before fruiting.

Nothing bad to report, not a single issue, everything is going as planned.

After looking at the surface today I decided to fruit them. Tarragon grows visibly like its brother Golden, but stronger.

As you can see no mold, and substrate colour change due to digestion.

Turns out that red colour was my camera and sunlight, you can see it here. Disregard the comment about substrate colour change.
I was going to use the all natural fruiting tek, but then decided to use the same method I use on Golden oyster. A bag, and another container, with added clean water. The colony container is placed in the middle.
For those who followed my Golden oyster tests, you would have seen this before. No need for misting, it will auto humidify due to evaporation.

Simply roll down the bag to fruit the tubers. Mist lightly when producing fruits.

Thanks Gr0wer, everyone is being really good with these dowels. I'm sorry for the vendor related issues, hes sorting it.
Side note, Tarragon is near extinct (rare). Worth $$$$$$$$$$$ in the US.
