Sour smell coming from vermiculite...!!??

Okay, so I've noticed this smell a couple times and hadn't narrowed it down until a few days ago. I've got a sour smell coming from my large bag of vermiculite. I've recently prepared a bunch of pf tek jars using this vermiculite. They're in the pressure cooker right now. I'm noticing the steam carrying this smell out of the PC. Any ideas what it might be? What may have caused it? (I'm assuming my rolling of mushroom cakes in the bag of verm is the cause but idk for certain). Anyhow, after sterilization, should it be okay to inoculate my jars?
Any info anyone can offer is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

i would not have done that! a chunk of myc is prob getting all funky fresh in that bag. ive never had a smell from a verm bag.
next time use a large plate. even a paper one. your cakes are fine most likely but you might want to get a new bag of verm.
wait were these colonized cakes you rolled or pre PCed brf cakes?

I rolled the cakes that were finished colonizing. I had a feeling that might be the culprit too.. but after sterilization is complete, should they be fine to inoculate without any extra concerns about contaminations?

I'd toss the bag. Mold is a bitch

Yes, I'm going to toss it and get a new bag. That's the plan. But will these jars be okay?

Your cakes should be fine. The smell should clear up by the end of the run.
Check the bag for mold/debris and discard any you find.
You should sterilize your verm before you roll your cakes and use a plate to roll on.
Hope this helps.

hence the question.. OP said rolling mushroom cakes. I've been around long enough to have heard of some really backwards things people have done.
OP did nothing really wrong but i would not have done it.(rolling colonized cakes in the bag of verm)

Your welcome.
I would run the cooker for a good 90 min on those cakes too. Be careful to adjust your stove so little steam escapes the PC because that brf will dry out if you run it too hot.

Not necessarily for a first timer.. someone who's never worked with vermiculite, or done any kind of work with mushrooms.. seems completely legit to me. No offense taken tho.
