Healthy jar?
    #23611165 - 09/04/16 12:08 PM (7 years, 4 months ago)

Hey guys, started my first 6 jars on August 29th, 4 of them have shown no activity so far, and the other two are slowly progressing. How does this one look like it's doing so far? Since it's the farthest along. I was worried about those small specs. Is that just sub stuck to the side? Doesn't look like mold or bacteria but I thought I'd double check , don't want to risk contaminating my other jars, even if they don't look to promising this go around.

Thanks for the reply, yeh I think the green at the bottom right may be the camera flash, it isn't generally that color but I'm definitely keeping an eye on it. I've seen a lot of your posts so I trust your judgement.

Those look good to me, but why do they have foil on top of them?  Don't you have lids with filtered holes on them?

Growth looks good. Your lid set up may or may not be a problem if it's restricting GE.

Thanks:blush:
Also are you using foil as a lid or have you got lids and foil if you have lids on then take off the foil its not needed and as said above restricting gas exchange which will slow things down alot

Its just got tightly sealed foil on it. Each jar has 4 small inoculation holes, I wasn't sure how the syringe would fare against the lids I have. This is that same jar as of today, how is the growth looking? I felt like I had some cobweb, it looks pretty light and fluffy. No off colors though.

This jar seems to be colonizing at like 3x the speed of the others. The stuff in the first pic kinda threw me off but as far as I can tell it's not colonizing faster than the other side of the jar. The first picture is unique to that one jar, the others jars don't seem to resemble it as much.

There are a lot of things that can cause this usually bacterial jars it depends how you look at it is that jar 3x faster or is in normal and the others are 3x slower
Looking at the pic from the other day it doesn't look like its going particularly rapid looks normal over a couple days

The other ones are going particularly slowly so that may be it. Is the mycelium just thinner in picture 1 or should I quarantine it? Everything has been extremely sterile to my knowledge, I went in and nuked the grow room a day before inoc., watching where I breath, only entering the grow room after a shower with clean clothes, etc..

I means its weird looking, I haven't seen anything like that. So it could just be weird growth.
I wouldn't quarantine it, the dry verm layer should keep anything nasty that might be lurking in there.
Just let it do its business and try not to bother it for as long as you can. The more you move it the more the dry verm layer moves and could potentially swish to one side leaving an area slightly exposed. I've had a jar go bad right where the verm layer met the sub, so that was my thinking, as I struggle to not mess with them multiple times a day lol

Not looking has been the hardest thing so far haha, but I'll definitely limit my contact with them. You've been a ton of help man I really appreciate all the info. Normally I'd be pulling my hair out trying to find something wrong with it.

Definitely :whathesaid:
The best thing to do is start other projects like agar, learn the principles find the equipment build Sab and if you haven't already sgfc not for agar but for cakes its needed
Make some cultures get a clean strong plate of myc then you'll have a never ending supply all before your first flush on the cakes

Not to get off topic, but yes, learning agar is an extremely wise decision.

So this is my progress so far, I threw out a jar today which was very obviously contaminated, but I'm a little worried about my other five. This first jar here has a picture from 3 angles, which so far looks okay, though I am concerned about a spot on the third picture.

The spot up top by the foil looked slightly funny to me, still from jar 1.

These are jars 2 & 3 which seem to be okay

Jars 4 and 5 seem iffy to me, but I can't be sure.

Thanks for everyone's help I really appreciate all the input I've received from y'all.

Any input on if I should be quarantining the last two jars? Or any of that matter. Thanks guys

They all seem kinda bacterial to me, no need to quarantine them though, just don't mess with their lids and keep waiting.

As I said before leave them alone the more you mess with them the more likely they'll contaminate and the more you stare at them the more worried you'll get yourself
