I am growing cobweb now :)
    #23605252 - 09/02/16 04:04 PM (7 years, 4 months ago)

Hi everyone,

I think, I messed up with something while I prepare my agar.
I prepare the agar mix (agar, potato brew, honey) and put it in small jars and sterilize the jars with pressure cooker.

3 of them has cobweb

This one is growing really healthy and flourishing immensely, I suppose :S

other 8 jar has kind of white stuff in it I think it is some kind bacteria. Sorry it is really difficult to take that pics.
only one of them looks clean for now.

it is already growing  I am thinking about growing in bigger containers but I dont like their spores, just the hairy mycelium
Though if you have any idea about why I messed up almost all agar with bacteria, it might help for next time.

Alright I can help with bacteria. So one time like two weeks ago. I didn't shower for like 3 or four days. I didn't have any iso, disinfectant spray, or a Torch. All I had was a water spray bottle, some gloves, dawn dish soap and a cigarette lighter. I'm not going to explain every little process I used. Basically number one is don't ever put yourself directly above the Petri dish. That's the biggest nono.

Another thing, those agar dishes have lids on them right?

Yes they have lids on them just open for seconds to inject some spore. I wasnt directly above them as I recall but not exactly sure.  I used the restroom. I sprayed the area with bleach water mix and wait for approx. 3 hours. I cant recall exactly how dirty I was though.

Don't use a bathroom. Make a still air box, and set it up on a table. It's easy and all you have to spray it with is disinfectant spray.

Don't ever use agar in the open air of your bathroom, or open air of any room. Where did you get that silly idea?

Build a still air box. They're one of the best tools for this hobby, period.

yeah but I prepared this one in that room and still using it after 2-3 months

pic is so bad, sorry for that. it is looking fuzzy and good
Although you are right, there is no reason to make things more risky. All my efforts for the last time in the trash right now :frown:

You got lucky then, as you can see from your current failure. You'll get a lot more failure too if you keep doing open air agar, it's just the way it is. I didn't write the rules, but I sure as hell follow them because I like success.

What are you putting those agar wedges into from that pictured dish? Open air agar transfers to grain? Then what, open air grain to grain?

Do you have any pictures of your successful grows you've done using that agar dish prepared in open air?

They didn't spend millions of years growing in canning jars. You're comparing apples to oranges.

Any new growers reading this during your research, don't listen to this guy. He will stare you down a bad path. Get a still air box, learn proper sterile technique, and succeed regularly.

lepis22, if you are so comfortable with open air then why not open up all of those jars for a minute each, and then proceed with your grow from there?

Mushrooms are strong. You are not growing them they just grow. You just prepare a good conditions for them and they just appreciate it. How clean you work just increase your success rate. Opening a jar for minute not that risky in my room. Putting your grains soaked in a jar even though doing all the sterilization techniques are much more risky. So, obviously, everybody does their best will achieve good results. I am going to open one jar just to see what will going to happen

To any new growers researching, and reading this, just do yourself a favor and do all sterile work inside of a still air box(sab).

I could put a loaded gun in my mouth for a minute to see what happens. Even if nothing happens, that doesn't mean it was a wise idea.
