Grain Spawn Shelf Life

In case anyone was wondering...
It's been like 5-6 months, it went through various temperature ranges (everything from 10c/50f to 33c/91.4f). Most of it is wheat, a few might be WBS:

As you can see, most of it is still quite usable, with 3 being obviously screwed. On top of that, I even have a theory as to WHY they are screwed and I even doubt it to be age:

As you can see I was trying to be a cheap bastard with tyvek and trying to use a small square with micropore over it, just enough to cover the hole. And in one contamed jar, the mycelium seems to have busted through they tyvek alltogether-also evident by the in vitro pinning (mid).

The other jars have the standard "screw the lid over a large flap of tyvek" groove going on and are doing fine.
Overall, grain spawn seems pretty immortal.

Using old spawn will be different from fresh one. Mycelium will be slower and results will be worse. It is best to put spawn in fridge after full colonization if you can.
I see you are from the same country as me. I recognized the lids. How is tyvek working out for you? Did you get it by cutting up tyvek suit lol? I'm using polyfill that I stuffed in hole in lid. Your method looks easier than mine.

Slovenc ?
But yeah, it's not unreasonable to expect crappier vigor. Just putting it out there for educational purposes... probably not a good idea to use them as master jars either.
Haven't tried anything other than tyvek so can't comment on efficacy, but it generally works without fail. Except in 2 jars, where, for unknown reasons, the myc broke the tyvek and in one case even fruited straight out of the grain jar in vitro through the lid hole (which, in hindsight, was too big). And this was from a grocery store clone that had really slow colonization time so likely senescent, heh.
I guess it was filled up too much and the tyvek got wet and allowed too much FAE/GE. Who knows.
Yeah, from tyvek overalls. Got the suit from http://market.mikro-polo.si/

Slovenc ja.
It is very common for mycelium to get to the filter and than break through. If I wait too long my king oyster starts fruiting. I guess the same thing happens with reishi and others. Filter material doesn't even need to get wet. Only mycelium needs to get in contact with it so that it can colonize it.
mikropolo is a nice site, I bought parafilm from them some time ago. Bauhaus and other stores should also have tyvek suits and it may be cheaper to get them there btw.
