    #23602777 - 09/01/16 09:10 PM (7 years, 4 months ago)

Are wide mouth quart jars an acceptable option for grain...I have a bunch of them.I only ask cause Ive noticed alot of people use the regular mouth jars...

Makes no difference.
Although my preference is to use regular mouth for master grain jars, and use wide mouth on the receiving jars in a g2g. Makes it easier to pour.

I think it all comes down to personal preference.

I use widemouth quart jars for rye without a problem. Easier to empty and clean than the regular mouth ones are.

Keep up the great work and I wish you many shrooms!

Much rye. Many colonized.

I use both sizes too, which ever is cheapest is my opinion. Also look into spawn bags .50-.70 each and hold easily 4-10 quarts of spawn if not more depending on what size you buy

Me too. I do like regular mouth for pouring though.

You will still want quart jars to use as grain masters for G2G into those spawn bags

I was considering bags once before but figured they would be difficult to work with in a SAB, but they are def on my mind along with some SFDs. Although I'm going with Pastywhyte's easy lid tek this go round.

Bags are a PITA in SAB. Id get half gallon or gallon jars if you can find them.

G2G into gallon jars is a good substitute for bags

Seems to me that a gallon jar would start to have some temperature issues in the middle.

As for OP, I try to stick to wide mouth quarts. It's annoying enough as is to scoop out thoroughly colonized spawn, and usually requires use of a knife. I don't imagine regular mouth jars would make this easier. (Note: Yes, I know, I'm letting stuff get overcolonized. I find this helps spawn take over the bulk sub faster and is more resistant to contamination)
