So someone just sent me a black tea scoby to make kombucha with. I've never brewed Kombucha before. Do I just brew up some black tea add some sugar and throw it in there or is there a deeper process to this?

No, it's pretty much that. Then you multiply your scobies and diversify your bonds

You need a starter tea, pretty much just a cup of your old batch to the new batch with the scoby on top. Do a Google search for kombucha recipe. Should use distilled water for your tea as tap will affect the health of the scoby. Ahain, Google that shit and learn.

Looks like the Scoby came with starter tea. I've been keeping it all in the fridge because I don't have a proper container for brewing.
What kind of jar would be best to brew with?

There are a bunch of videos on YouTube. You need a large wide mouth glass jar.
You can also use molasses. Comes out like stout.

Not really a fan of stouts. I'm probably going to flavor mine with fruit after it's done brewing. I prefer the sweeter less vinegar tasting varieties. I also hear to keep it about 20days rather than 30 to leave a little sweetness and have it taste less fermented. Also, I don't drink alcohol, and I hear the abv goes up the longer it ferments.
I read that the scoby and starter tea should be kept in a fridge until you are ready to start using it to brew.

I keep it in the fridge between batches in a mason jar. I usually go 8 days with a cloth over the top then add the fruit juice and ferment 3 days more in a rubber sealed bottle to give it some fizz. Once in a while I mix it up with Yerba mate or molasses. Alcohol is low enough I don't feel it and I got low tolerance. Lemon ginger turmeric secondary is really good.
I usually use 5 green tea and 3 black.

Could you post a pic of your scoby? I am curious how fresh it is.
I watched several vids about this last month because I was thinking about trying my hand at a kombucha company, I have the space for a small operation, would be fun to do too.
I might buy a kit to start with, I found a decent one, then after that just keep them scobies multiplying. Also, there are a number of brewing stores around my area, so materials wouldn't be hard to come by.
