why do we fan
    #23600842 - 09/01/16 11:38 AM (7 years, 4 months ago)

do we fan to evaporate mist droplets on the cake to cause pinning?

or

to release gas buildup?

is direct sunlight needed?

We fan to remove the saturated air from misting literally 3 seconds before fanning. Something that 5 minutes of passive fae would do. That's why you're only supposed to fan after you mist, no point in fanning at any other points. Fanning is not needed at all. I haven't fanned since 2013.

Direct sunlight is not needed. You can get the same results with a 6500K bulb 12/12 on/off. In fact direct sunlight can be detrimental more than beneficial for most people. Increased evaporation rates mean you need to keep an eye on it to keep it healthy. If you can't confidently say you can keep a substrates surface properly hydrated with misting, don't use direct sunlight.

... No.  Don't EVEN come around answering people's questions if you are trying to pasteurize BRF in another thread.

Yeah I wouldn't listen to that dunce. It's done ONLY after misting to replace the saturated air with dry air for an evaporation kick start. Wanna know what refreshes the air? The holes in your chamber that's constantly moving air in and out

Worst answer you got in this thread

Fanning is 100% optional when using a SGFC

Fanning used to be a huge source of confusion for new growers, as better info has become more available its less of an issue I think.

People used to think fanning was a source of "FAE" or refreshing the air... because of this confusion lots of people used to try to automate tubs with fish tank hoses that pump air in and whatnot

Fanning is optional , if you wanna fan for a few seconds after misting go for it

Do you mean that in all methods of cultivation, fanning is optional?

What about a dude using a bucket and a veil of plastic over the top as a fruiting chamber?

Yes.  And no matter how much you fan you are still gunna need frequent air exchange (frequent meaning all the time... through holes or a cracked lid). Fanning just helps kick start evaporation off the substrate after misting - thats it

if you have to fan your chamber for FAE you have to fan it 6 times an hour. FAE should be passive, you shouldn't have to fan any FC

Fanning is fine and well if you do it after misting, but really, it's just easier to not talk about fanning so that nobody draws confusion between it and FAE.  With just FAE, and no talk of fanning or fans, it's a lot more clear that what it needs is to be able to breathe.

edit:  Mad, TC, check out his sig.   It's the hall of his own shame.
