Petri dishes compromised?
    #23600001 - 09/01/16 05:01 AM (7 years, 5 months ago)

Dishes arrived with a few small holes/rips in the sleeve plastic. In my mind they're no longer sterile... has anyone else run into this issue? Did you attempt to use them anyway?

I noticed the sleeve plastic seemed thin and weak anyway - let me know reliable vendors to use as ideally I would initially like to use petris for MS/clone grow outs and then xfer clean growth to pasty plates.

They are probably fine actually.  They seal rather well.  Just wipe the outsides done with alcohol, put into a still air box, and inoculate them.

. Disposable plates are never packed very tight in the sleeve, the lids and the dish separate from each other quite easily in the package. If there are holes in the sleeve they could contaminate very easily.

You can go ahead an pour them if you like but I would let them sit a couple weeks at room temp go make sure they are clean and nothing grows on them.

I buy my plates off Fungi Perfecti because I really like the "Falcon" brand plates, they are heavy duty, have a tear away sleeve which is easy to open and come with a sterile sleeve folded up to pack them in after pouring.

i won't use it if there is legit rip or tear but  if its a pinhole or two, yes i will pour the sleeve, and watch/mark it like mushpunx said.  just wait 4-5 days.  it will show in that time if its there.

I bought a sleeve of 20 on ebay for cheap and the pack was ripped, never used em.

On the other hand I did accidentally open a sleeve outside the sab recently, they haven't contamed yet.

I use plastic. I used to do no-pour in glass jars with polyfill but I had a ton of issue with them so I switched and it's been smooth sailing since.

no one who works with agar consistently buys pre poured plates.

glass plates can be pricey and slippery with iso.  I store plates a lot, so I would need even more if I switched to glass.  if I found 60 for a good price, I might think about it.

no pour pasty plates and glass half pints are a cheaper option, but need more space for storing. its not necessarily hard to see thru them, but its tricky to get a good picture without opening the lid.

Nah, I pour agar in my SAB.

I use these old sake bottles modified with SFDs for pressure cooking the agar.

Thanks! I used to wrap plates horribly but eventually I realized I was doing it wrong and watched a video on how to wrap them properly.

I love parafilm.  Nice saki bottles too!  I believe I saw you post that somewhere before.
I just bought a couple pyrex media bottles 500ml and they are designed really well.  Pouring in a San is a breeze now
