Reishi grow without sawdust?

Hello. Does anyone know of a reishi tek that uses cardboard? Or really any substrate without Sawdust /fuel pellets? I'm having trouble acquiring these items. I know they are wood lovers but could I use straight straw? I have a bunch of different substrate materials, just no wood. I have 4 qts red reishi spawn and 4 quarts black reishi spawn which will both be at %100 within the next week. Can you grow them invitro? Any help is greatly appreciated

You can grow them invitro in a bag. You can also use cardboard, and waste paper products. Check the shredded paper bin if you work in an office.
If you grow them invitro, youll end up with antlers instead of conks.

Great! Antlers is what I want. Do you put a layer of coir on top? Or just stick in a sgfc?

Neither. If its invitro, you leave it in the bag/jar No SGFC required. No coir or casing required either.

yep, you can also use straw and other materials as well... from some comments that I've read from people growing it, you can grow reishi on like 3" subs without a problem, this will also allow for the conks to grow up without you having to open the bag to make room for growth.

I think theres some miscommunication going on here.
If youre growing invitro, which is what I thought your intent was, then you just load everything up in a filter patch bag, seal it up, and open it to harvest.
If you are using a tub, then go with a monotub not a SGFC.
None of that would require a humidity tent. Do you have a tek you are going to follow?

I just thought you needed one over the jar. I'm just going to go invitro for now until I get some sawdust

I recommend the filter patch bag if you can get them. If not, then the jar will work too.
I think Trusted Cultivator did the reishi in a jar awhile back. Might take a look through his pictures.

What about hardwood bark mulch, all over the country. If you wanted to add some heavier substrate.

This is a good point too. I got hung up on trying to find sawdust too. Then I realized that I could run down to any tree service and pick up buckets of wood chips for free.

If your growing reishi invitro i highly recommend going sterile. The 3-4 months it takes for antlers to form gives ample time for contamination. I had great results with 20% bran and sawdust about 3" deep. You could try 20% bran and cardboard or the paper based kitty litter im sure.

If you look at the pet sections of some stores, or even local pet stores. You should find paper pellets, and wood pellets, as kitty litter.

Awesome link man!! Just read about half of it already, and will finish it up today. It's a page turner. One of the guys even said you can use coir. I. Gonna check out the pet store today. I didn't realize it took "months" for antlers to form. Ugh!

Do black AND red reishi grow antlers, or just red? These are black. And I have them sitting open now

Not a whole lot of folks have done Black. In comparison to Red anyway. Maybe someone who has done it will chime in. I would assume that they would though.

I think the big point here though is to do invitro its best to have bags so they have room to grow. That jar will run out of room very quickly. Do you have any pics? An SGFC, while not ideal, may work if you let them grow invitro in the jar and the open the lid and place it inside an SGFC - that way you will get antlers and conchs

Yup I have three sgfc 's, but I'm not too crazy about putting them in there to take up space for three whole months. I got em on a shelf by a window now. Definitely getting some sawdust before I start another jar

Update : I got 3 1/2 qts of black reishi spawn sitting out uncovered for like a week now, and as the spawn shrinks back from the glass, its producing an insane amount of fluid around/underneath. Is this normal? Should I pour the fluid off or leave it? Cheers

I've got a mono tub going and the same deal. I've been pouring the water off. I'm thinking that in the near future I will have to do soak and drain as moisture is needed. Don't think it needs to sit in water. Open to suggestions

I had some galindoi jars do this once, too. And they never produced sclerotia. Eventually they turned purple. I was sucking the water out of the galindoi jars with a syringe until they went purple. Lol. Probably 100 mils of the stuff
