Old agar plates..what do you do?
    #23597495 - 08/31/16 01:25 PM (7 years, 4 months ago)

So I've made my first agar to agar transfers. I have the old plates leftover with what appears to be tons of healthy myc on them.

Im just curious...What do you guys do with your leftover plates?

You can still use them for inoculations. I think they work great in the search for clones.

I figured I should just tiger drop em in some grain jars...they would be an on the side project anyway since the primary project is the actual transfers I just made.
But I also know that sometimes you can't see contams on the plate...

Are they enclosed plates, like pasty plates, or are they open petris?

I would not do a tiger drop on a regular petri, contams can get in and can be around the perimeter area. If the plate was in an enclosed container this is not as big an issue.

I would stick some in the fridge if you can.

Why not PC up some grain your have lying around and do 1-2 lb mycobags?  Mycobags hold a shit load more grain than a jar.  Cut each plate into wedges and toss them all into the bag for each Petri dish.  They will colonize like crazy.  With 20 plates you'll have enough to start 10 monos at once if you really wanted.

I'm doing this with PE, KSSS, TC and B+ (and possibly Mexicube soon) each with their own plate, mycobags, and then eventually CVG bulk mono.

I don't have any mycobags but I do have widemouth quart jars I was planning on using for grains. I was thinking I could tiger drop the plates to quart jars of grains and get a few mini monos out of something I was just gonna toss in the compost pile. IF it all goes to shit it will be a great learning experience.

I'm working with KSSS right now as well, I printed the cap off the monster in my signature and put them to agar, super fresh!

Of course quart jars will always work too.  I just find mycobag easier to manage, especially when you go to spawn it.  Also, you can add bulk right into the bag of its large enough, and colonize it right in the bag.

Depending on what my goal is, I use the bulk bag for either:  Fruiting within the bag itself (rarely), Dunking and rolling and fruiting as a bulk block in SGFC, or crumble into a Mono or tray in SGFC, case and fruit.

I've had a LOT of success though with the bulk block and tray in SGFC method, while using bags for the entire colonization from inoculation to spawn run.

Well I guess it's time to start my first grain jars! Looks like I have to go get some supplies today, I gotta get grain and make lids.

I'll put one plate per jar. If it all works out I could get five mini monos out of the deal!

I like this idea. the more inoculation points the better.
I normally make LC out of the left overs and toss the rest into my compost. Feels like a big waste but what can ya do.

LI is a great idea too if you can get it right.    3-4 CCs in a jar of any size will colonize in 10 days or less.  I love when that happens.

I have tried Li and its really cool but definitely not worth it imo. I have about the same amount of colonization time with LC. especially if you pick vigorous strains.

I see literally no benefits for a noob to grow out on agar until clean, drop a wedge in LC, and then test it again on agar for cleanliness, over just taking a clean agar plate, and adding water to it for LI.

LC can be great too, and I still use it/have some in the fridge. I just don't think it's the kinda thing beginners should be doing. LI IMO is much more beginner friendly.

Now that's the kind of advice I'm talking about...thank you Mad Season! From what I gather I could make a liquid inoculate and still be able to Tiger drop the rest of the agar?

Idk. Never tried it, but if you did Munch's blenderless LI, I see no reason why you wouldn't be able to tiger drop after.
