Growing in the winter?
    #23597381 - 08/31/16 12:54 PM (7 years, 4 months ago)

I've been scouring for alternative means of income. Been at the same job since I was 17 and I cannot step foot in that building without evoking suicidal thoughts. I'm going to quit any day now. Further more it's made me never want to work for a company again. So I've been trying to figure out how to support myself. My go at mushrooms last year left much to be desired. I established a means of efficient oyster production which could easily be scaled up. I was producing 15-20 pounds a week without even utilizing my full space. I have the process down, but the season is short here in Maine. The temperature when I grew last summer was ideal for oysters. But come October it can dip to freezing and will hover there until March, and of course it will periodically dip much lower between then.

I was growing out of my parents basement and that's no longer an option. I would have to rent/buy a space, or perhaps even build a large shed and insulate the crap out of if. But the mushrooms need fresh air, lots of it. That's lots of air that has to be heated. I haven't run the numbers but I am questioning the profitability of doing that. Does anyone else grow during the cold months?

Not to mention, my town population goes from 10k to 5k during the winter. Many of the restaurants shut down or experience volume loss. The farmers market goes from this vibrant outdoor high traffic setting, to the innards of church where traffic is drastically reduced.
It seems like it would be wise to prepare instead for the next year, but I need a way out now.
