Yep... looks like lipstick mold... screwed for sure.
Also, leaving the foil on sure doesn't help matters.

Well now it does, since there's mold in the jar. May as well leave it on all the way to the trash.

I'm curious about this, is it bad to leave the foil on even if the foil is perforated from the inoculation? Assuming the dry verm layer on top.
i.e. foil covering the top as in the pic but with 4 needle holes in it
If all the foil was taken off and it exposed just a dry verm layer, is that preferable?

First, why would you do this, and what would be the point of the foil if you were poking holes in it?

------------------------------------------------------ Lids come off after PC or Steam sterilization, bruh!
Dry verm layer is your filter- don't plug the holes, bruh!
There was some serious lack of sterile technique on this one, bruh! ------------------------------------------------------ Really though....without all the "bruh"....what was your technique in inoculating these jars?
Did you flame tip the needle in between each jar?
Are there any signs of life in any other jars?
Did you read any teks prior to doing this?
If so, which tek did you follow?

I thought he didn't have lids, so in my imagination he was using the foil in place of a lid, with the holes made by inoculation providing air exchange as it colonised. I've seen that mentioned in a few logs and pf teks - basically an equivalent foil lid with holes. In the classic pf-tek videos a screw-on lid with holes is kept on during colonisation, or is that out of date?
Should have made my own thread to ask this, but I mistakenly thought it was on topic!

yes lids. holes. Foil. Dry verm on top. take foil off before you knock um up. If not top layer of verm gets soggy and possibaly contamatory.
