Ya I wasn't sure I was washing them in the tub with a quarter cup of bleach with my jars but the bleach eats up the finish and they rust faster ... I know I'll still have to do a little hand washing but not like before haha

I used to use a toothbrush to go over the rubber part.

Now using plastic lids with an sfd underneath, the sfds get soaked in a low bleach solution and both filter and lid are washed with a high pressure water head to get debris.

I only clean my lids like once every couple runs, haha. Soaked in real hot water to soften things up and then gently scrubbed with a scrub brush and soap.

If they are going through a PC cycle, then they should be clean enough. That should kill pretty much any funk thats stuck on them.

This answers the question I had recently , I have some SFDs that are a little stained, got some graim gunk on the lids etc

So a little bleach in the water. Do you dry them fully before using them yes?

So pcing them by themselves is OK? It won't warp the lids or rings?

Sometimes and sometimes not, azur says Stamets books say soak for an hour before pc so, often they are dry, but afaik no harm in them being wet.

I think he is saying if they are PC'd on grain jars it will kill them, rather than recommending to PC the lids on their own.

If there is nutrients all over the lids and you PC them then it could still contaminate if growth could develop on the outside and track inside via the nutrients on the lid. If you let dried on crap soak a good while it should more easily be brushed off. Bleach can lead to rusting as mentioned.

Blackout said it right. You're doing a PC cycle to sterilize anyway. You dont need to do it separately. Unless, as he stated there is so much funk on your filter that its possible to wick through. If thats the case, then get to scrubbing before it goes in the PC.

I just now got plastic lids for my array of glass jars. I'm never going back to lid/band.

Boiling your lids and rings is fine, especially if there is gunk on them.  Even before PC'ing, any steps taken to increase sterility is good practice.  A bunch of little, seemingly pointless things add to be a lot in the end game. Nothing can be "too clean".  Boiling water is not hot enough to warp metal.
