I am just now researching how to do agar and what I need as well I have the pressure cooker thankfully can't wait to get into agar and into grains.

3/8" hole in the middle of the lid and stuffed tightly with a wad of polyfill.

Just for starting out id stick with drilling holes in the lid and use Tyvek from the post office. Some folks say 'not post office tyvek!' But I've never had an issue.
Drill what ever holes you want. I've done 5 1/8 inch holes(4 in corners 1 in the middle for inoculate and cover with micropore tape after inoc. Obviously the tyvek sheet is cut to fit nicely and the drilled lid is put over the tyvek layer n screwed on.

These photos show both ways of using SFDs, but you would use tyvek or EZ felt the same way
You can stuff a tight wad of polyfill into a drilled hole like above.
Another great lid is a double layer of tyvek between the lid (over the hole) and band.
You can also do the same with kraft felt.
The best lid however is a synthetic filter disc, either between band and lid or popped up underneath an auto clavable plastic lid with hole drilled (my preference as it is a one piece lid).
SFD's are reusable- you only have to buy them once.

I would use tyvek but I hate messing around with rtv silicone, the fumes stink up my house and it's just too messy in general

Plastic lids with a 1/4" hole in the middle and no SHIP. Melt the edge of your 1/4" hole a little with a torch and stick a quarter sized SFD on and the plastic will bond to it nicely. inoculate in a SAB by lifting the lid a little.
BTW: you are gonna get your head spun some more because you will get replies from people all with different methods.

Whats the silicone for? You just open the jar lid to inoculate, no need for injection ports or even injecting through the polyfill. You just use a still air box

I've actually had trouble with lid failures when I used to attach a quarter sized piece of SFD over the hole in the lid, I find it much better to pop an entire SFD up underneath the plastic lids

I once left a jar of blue oyster spawn WAYYY too long and it pushed the damn SFD right off the lid! Pulled it right off the RTV silicone.

Thats a good reason to fuse/melt it to the lid. I never liked the way RTV doesn't stick very well.
completely out of left field, it would be cool if the shroomerites of this forum would keep a contam counter and a clean counter in their sig. I can see that not working out well though, its still a nice thought.

and: Sfd's are THE WAY TO GO!
I use these (not the flimsy thin ones)THICK felt sheets(sometimes referred to as ez felt) and cut them into little squares and they work just as good as cutting up the sfd's from vendors and is waaay cheaper...
sorry I don't have any pics of just grains colonizing but the sub/grain mixture would need just as much ge as grains to colonize.
oh yeah and the best part of these is you can just melt the plastic lid around the 1/4" hole with a torch lighter and then push the felt cutout on and done. Fully sealed and fully permanent plus they don't need any time to dry and no mess of silicon.
has made making tons of lids a very simple and a very quick task.
They should be sold at most craft stores and I got mine at wallymart in the craft section.
Still I only picked the thickest ones they had just to be sure they'd do the job.
Dilated has a good writeup on making the lids with that felt. I'll try to find it for ya.
Gr0wer also has as video here somewhere that shows him using the same felt and melting them on the lids.
His method is a little over the top as he uses a torched socket to make the holes and then uses the big ol' propane torch to melt the plastic to attatch the filter.
I found making the holes is very easy with a small soldering iron and melting the plastic is way easier with a little hand held butane torch gun.
Either way sfd's are the way to go.
Dilated's Tek no silicon Tek gr0wer's vid and tek
I found the THICK felt sheets work a lot better for this tek than myco sfd's because the felt really adheres to the melted plastic and will truly be impossible to remove...

This is the easiest way for sure. It works and it's much less work than these rtv'd tyvek or felt lids.

Well, the easiest would actually be a completely unmodified lid.

I think I'll probably do the 3/8" hole with polyfill
now to figure out where to get polyfill..... lol
