so i live in southern canada and earlier this year i threw out some contaminated cakes which ended up growing mushrooms everywhere outside. my question is if the spores start growing around here will the mycelium last through the winter?

assuming it's psilocybe cubensis it's pretty unlikely that the mycelium would be able to handle temperatures that cold. on the continent of north america, the farthest north that i've seen wild cubes reported from is around Tennessee or Oklahoma.

I've never had a patch survive the winter.

cool, i was not aware of that. someone in the hunting and ID subforum posted some pictures of outdoor cubes they found in new jersey but it was suggested by a TI that the person had just come across some discarded, spent substrate. maybe they were really wild.

I dump spent subs behind my shed. One year I started finding cubes everywhere, even in the front yard and neighbors side As far as I know cubes dont grow naturally in New York but I thought it must have been the spores
But I found out it was animals moving spawn around and burying it

I doubt you'd get to harvest any cubes here, Vancouver Island, if they did propogate wild. They grow so slow the slugs would have the caps chewed off before you even knew they were there. I've tossed two spent cakes and that has been my experience with any latent pins that appeared.
Warmer weather come next spring will give me any indication if it wintered over. Though I suspect not likely.
