What's on your lid?

What type of lids do you use?
Do you have 7 - 1/4" holes with polyfil and a SHIP?
Do you have an SFD only - and nothing else?
Do you have a small DMT elf slowly pulling matter from one side of a solid structure to another so your grain can grab some GE?
Pictures if you can! -----------------------------
(If anyone can supply me a picture of the elves transmitting matter through your lids I'll totally make it worth your while...)
GO!

im having fun using tyvek on quart jars with 5 1/4 drilled in the lids and a few with just tyvek and the ring.
i also have jars with 1/2inch hole w/polyfi and a 1/8inch hole for inoculation(until my plates grow)cover with mircopore tape... i was unsure i made the polyfil tight enough and didnt want to pop it out into the jar(happened once by accident)

Hmm. Posting your own thread, eh? I always knew you were that kind of guy... J/K...
I have read this thread prior to this post... It was very enlightening and gave me an insightful view on your thread subject for sure!
I have 5 jars with a polyfil lid and 5 jars with SFD's right now.
I am going to post 'side-by-sides' when they are done...
I'm not gonna lie...I haven't found the definitive answer yet in regards!
Thanks for your post.

I use two layers of micropore tape outside and inside over a 1/8" hole. Not ideal, but i can't find thick tyvek where i live. I'm done with polyfill...

Polyfil pisses me off to the max! I need to try micropore tape as well. Not sure where to find it but I'm a smart gal, I'll figure it out!

When it comes to mushroom cultivation, I dont think you can beat a tool that is designed for mushroom cultivation....its for this reason that I stick with SFDs...
You can buy micropore tape at any drugstore but it isn't mean to be used as a filter.....
micropore tape is only used for PF Tek style cakes, but in that situation its the dry verm layer that acts as a filter, not the tape. If you were to use micropore tape over as a filter on a grain jar it would be contam city.

I got far less contams with micropore than with polyfill moving around in the hole when manipulating the jars. The sheet metal of the lid is so thin that it doesn't seal well with the polyfill in my case (tightly packed as much as possible). I got better results by adding a layer of tape on top of the polyfill with some needle holes in it. For agar, i use off center hole with micropore. A contamination would fall right under the hole.
But yeah, i need to find a good source of SFDs, it's the right tool for the job.

Lid porn? Lid porn.

I have a few plastic ones with Whatman filters and orange SHIPs on the rare occasion I need to make LC.

I use micropore over tyvek after i inoculate jars(using MS or LI). havent had a contam jar in ages.. but SFD are going to be best but i also need a good source. spending roughly $1 per is nuts if you have a serious amount of jars.

I use these (not the flimsy thin ones)THICK felt sheets(sometimes referred to as ez felt) and cut them into little squares and they work just as good as cutting up the sfd's from vendors and is waaay cheaper...

sorry I don't have any pics of just grains colonizing but the sub/grain mixture would need just as much ge as grains to colonize.
oh yeah and the best part of these is you can just melt the plastic lid around the 1/4" hole with a torch lighter and then push the felt cutout on and done. Fully sealed and fully permanent plus they don't need any time to dry and no mess of silicon.
has made making tons of lids a very simple and a very quick task.
They should be sold at most craft stores and I got mine at wallymart in the craft section.
Still I only picked the thickest ones they had just to be sure they'd do the job.
Dilated has a good writeup on making the lids with that felt. I'll try to find it for ya.
Gr0wer also has as video here somewhere that shows him using the same felt and melting them on the lids.
His method is a little over the top as he uses a torched socket to make the holes and then uses the big ol' propane torch to melt the plastic to attatch the filter.
I found making the holes is very easy with a small soldering iron and melting the plastic is way easier with a little hand held butane torch gun.

wouldn't it be ok(maybe doubled up) since it can be used on pastyplates(prepour agar)?
or is the extra amount of GE that grains need going to compromise the filter somehow since agar really doesn't need ge?
Either way sfd's are the way to go.

poly > tyvek any day. SHIPs are pretty much useless on grain jars and has nothing to do with g2g'ing as I saw suggested earlier.. if you dont trust poly buy SFDs and cut them up if you dont wanna spend $. peace of mind is priceless!

Nobody who uses LI uses a SHIP to get it in the jar.
