Outdoor beds (Wood lovers) Fruiting * 4
    #2359088 - 02/20/04 11:27 AM (19 years, 11 months ago)

Using one of last years fruited trays as spawn.

I spread it around, in a nice shady spot next to my compost bins.

Then covered with some beech wood chips, to a depth
of about 4 to 10 inches.

The Azure spot

Now I just have to wait untill autum, and water in the dryer months.

Updates in about 8 months time

The trays used contain a lot of myc still, the wooden one
themselves are totaly colonised.

So I can just refill these with more chip, and over
time they will recolonise. makeing wooden trays a
bit like the never emptying porridge pot

So, this is the whole area

About 30 litres of spawn were used from 2 species,
and about 4 square yards of beech wood chips.

I have another 12 square yards of beech chips for
my planed Psilocybe subaeruginosa bed, I'll post those
when and as I make them.

All these woodlovers are loving the English autum rain this year :-)
Last year was a horrid dry autum.

Azures :-)

10/28/04 10:52 AM

Been nice a wet over here this autum :-)

fresh pins and second and third flushes everywere.
Cold weather is coming in though, so the season is soon to end i think.

10/30/04 08:34 AM

Azures

all the patches that are fruiting the best are under the tomatoe beds, these were probably the best watered beds, as they recived all the rn off from the tomatoe irragation.

So this shows the importance of watering your woodchips during the summer months i think.

Cyans

10/31/04 08:50 AM

Not a great deal of difference between growning shrooms and growing plants imhe.

11/02/04 02:46 AM

This season is great for the Cyans, there the biggest I've grown yet, their loving the mild temps and heavy rains :-)

11/03/04 03:07 AM

A nice little clump of Psilocybe cyanescens.

Anno had stated that they like to fruit around the edges (dont know if true or not) so what he does is makes channels of soil so thier is more outside perimiters thus more fruiting. But from your set up you know what you are doing

Most shrooms fruit at the edge of their
mycelial mats, this it one reason why fairy
rings apear as a ring.
So Anno has a good point. But for these beds
I'm pretty much just taking the easyest route.
Just to show how simple it is to cultivate
woodoving actives in correct climate zone.
Sure, things can be done better.

You might like my Psilocybe subaeruginosa
thread thats soon to be made.
It will have automatic watering, predug trenches
and winter cold protection.

Its just cardboard, and i used it as a weed suppresant, and way to give
the woodlover mycelium a head start against soil borne oraganisums.
Its totaly broken down now.

I use the chicken wire over the beds, because i keep chickens, and
sometimes they dig up and kick the wood chips everywere, as do some
wild birds. So the wire just stops this from happening.

Gr0wer, there just under twice as potent as cubensis ime.

Theyve pretty much already been eaten this year, all the wooden
ones have fallen apart, but only after recolonising more chips, so
there not a great long term plan. theplastic ones are still going strong though :-)

Wow, AWESOME job Loki. You deserve a lot of credit.

I've always though Cyans and Azures looked wet and slimy because of the shinyness. Is this a true assumption?

I've never noticed them to look slimey...accept for one of the pics of cyans on sporeworks...maybe when they do look slimey its from being rained on/watered

They do tend to be a bit slippery when wet :-)
But once they dry out there pretty simular in texture to cubensis.

Azures

all the patches that are fruiting the best are under the tomatoe beds, these were probably the best watered beds, as they recived all the rn off from the tomatoe irragation.

So this shows the importance of watering your woodchips during the summer months i think.

They should fruit just fine during the winter months. I'm hoping to give 'em a try some day.

and, yes, I used a dictionary to look the up word 'facile' because I forgot what it meant, but I knew it was a positive thing.
