Anyone got a good pic of a casing ready to fruit?
    #2358933 - 02/20/04 10:46 AM (20 years, 1 month ago)

Never cased before and I have a casing that has about 90% of the casing layer (the top part that you can see) colonized. Should I fruit it... I don't think I need to patch because I'm past the point where patching would make any difference, its all colonized.

This was after a week of incubation and patching x4.  You don't want the surface collonized.  Can you see the white just under the top of the casing?  That is what you want.  (Blow up the pic)

You get a pinset like this. (1.4 dry OZ on 12 1/2 pints of PF cakes, total was well over 50g through all the flushes)

And a first flush like this.

Good luck!  :mushroom2:

A slight drop in temp will do , just enough to bring it out of vegative growth and into fruiting range , Usually a 3-8* drop in temp will induce fruiting .
Good Luck

Well in that case I have 1 casing that is ready to fruit and one casing that has gone far to long (if there is not supposed to be a lot of myc. on the surface). Can I fruit this one that has gone to far or should I patch all over it and try to catch it in time next time?

Initiate pinning , it will be fine . The pic I sent was a strain that did not want to stop growing , even after a cold shock , but it produced a very nice crop irregardless of going to long . It is quite obvious there was no overlay , moisture was still able to soak down into substrate .

My first casing. I waiting waaaaay too long to initiate pinning.

So this is what I got.

In my opinion you are better to pin early than late, overlay is a bitch.

That is alright.  You don't learn unless you mess something up.  Someone can tell you what to do, but until you do it yourself you don't know exactly what to do.  I really encourage patching to get a really nice pinset.  People said I was excessive at patching my second casing (above) since I did it four times, but look at that pinset.  IMHO you cannot patch too much until you achieve nice and uniform mycelium penitration of the casing layer.

Fruit both of those casing!  Good luck! :mushroom2:

I never cold shock. I don't know if it really helps casing of cubes, but I suppose it cannot hurt. Be sure to post your results.
