Side pinning
    #23587103 - 08/28/16 02:21 PM (7 years, 5 months ago)

My test tubs are pinning heavily on the sides as I never lined with anything. Is this normal and do I just let it grow as normal?

A little harder to harvest IME, but yeah, that's normal for me.

It's not just the sides there are around hundred or so pins on the bottom and along the other sides yet there are only 3 pins coming from the top. Would I not be better flipping and putting back in the tray?

It's because the sub is shrinking creating a micro climate you could put it on a rack in an sgfc and fruit it

Fix the cause not symptoms. Flipping only puts the pins where they didn't want to grow from in the first place

Definitely try an opaque container next time. If you have a terrarium you can birth it and let it fruit in there.

Opaque containers have nothing to do with side pins. Light doesn't cause side pins

It's just caused by not having the tub dialed in right, right? Ellaborate if you will bodhi.

It's the micro climate from not having liners

Microclimates caused by a lack of liner explains side-pinning, but what about bottom pinning?

Do you realize the air can be pushed under the sub in a small container? Evaporation causes pins to form the shrinking of the sub causes air to freely pass around the sub why we use liners to prevent that if the sub never shrunk from the mycelium consuming it we wouldn't have to use liners

What do y'all use for liners? Any sterile technique involved?

Garbage bags I don't usually do it but you should wipe them down with ISO

I use painters plastic on a roll. It's thicker than I'd like and doesn't always prevent pins. I've used a cut up garbage bag too. Never once bothered with wiping down with iso. Iso does almost nothing for sterilizing in open air. Once dry it's no longer effective if it ever really was in the first place.

Why suggest someone do something that you don't normally do?  Anyway I'd just leave the bag how it is.  It's a lot cleaner because of the way it's manufactured than with you rubbing all over it.

You're right about the garbage bags though, use them.

Side pins suck and are more prone to bacterial contams.  Nothing a dehydrator cant fix

I have never tried it but looked it up before and RR (roger rabbit) said it could cause abhorts (the shrooms just stop growing/maturing properly), the shrooms get "confused" and do not grow properly, gravity apparently does matter. I think it is more acceptable to flip between flushes, but am not sure if its advisable.

I had it happen while doing an experimental grow and was considering putting supports under the substrate, which could be fairly solid at this stage. e.g. get some plastic container, 1 or 2 inch diameter and cut discs out which I would rest the substrate on to give the bottom pins more room and air to grow. Some grow in PF jars invitro and they just grow compressed around the sides.

Instead I just took it out of the container and put it on a plate to grow. When I lifted it off the plate I had some pretty big mature & squashed looking shrooms underneath. First flush in the first pic, the rest are the second flush. I was put back in the container after the first was harvested.

I think I might take it out and put in on something like a square plate that I have now that I have seen this. Thanks dude

If it is not convenient you could leave it in it. I wanted prints and also happened to have a large container to put them in.

Here are invitro pics, none are mine.

I could have just let mine grow squashed up and used swabs to take spores but I wanted to see what would happen. If I did not have room I would have left them be.
