Total beginner so just curious why you can't just remove the top portion by cutting it off as opposed to toss the whole thing?

Also what is the safe way to toss the whole thing?  Is there risk associated with handling disposal incorrectly?

Is there any web services available for a fee who  specialize in mushroom contamination where you can send photos and then can diagnose the situation?

You can't cut it out, the contams you can see is just the tip of the ice berg it'll be all the way through and cutting it would spread the spores all over the place.
You should PC it kill the contams then bin it whether you remove it from jar or bin the lot is up to you
And your last question yes there is a place to do that your on it and its free. Why would you wanna pay someone to tell you to bin it. You can't save a cake like that its not like its the end of the world it takes like 2 hours (with out cooling time) to make them
What was your process of making your cake? Walk us through it so we can identify where it may have gone wrong
Did you have a dry verm layer on top?

Thanks for your response!  I appreciate the feedback.  Purchase 12 jars already filled with sterilized substrate from Midwest Grow along with their growing kit.  Don't have a pressure cooker so not sure how to kill the contamination before I dispose of it.  Any ideas on what I should do without a PC.

Steam them.

Do you have access to brownrice, vermiculite, pp 5 containers or mason jars, and a pot of boiling water with lid?

If so you do it yourself and you could steam them for 2 hours instead of hoping they sterilized properly.

Also all inoculations require still air or a flowhood and the syringe needle should have been flame sterilized.

I'd get in touch with who ever sold them you and get a refund and then read Pf tek do it for your self it'll cost a fraction of the price and you can do it as many times as you want for the rest Pf your life
Just bin it try not to breathe in any of the contams open out doors away from everything
Edit: just seen did you inoculate the jars? Did you use still air box sprayed down with soapy water isopanoled gloves flamed needle?

I used Midwest Growing recommended technique where you clean and sterilize your oven with Clorox then heat oven for 30 minutes at 350 then lower to I believe 225 and inoculate the jars.  Flame needle between jars and / or wipe with alcohol wipes.  The oven at 225 causes the air to rise and thus no contaminates without killing the mushroom spores if you have the jars in the oven for just a few seconds while inoculating.  I will take your advice and try DIY with substrate the next time although it was probably something I did not midwest's fault.

That's not right surely having an open oven would allow heat to rise and cold dirty air would rush in, the second you open the oven any supposed sterility would be gone air convection causes cold air to take place of rising hot air if I remember high school science
Make a still air box for inoculation if and when you move on to agar you will see how much contams there are in the air even when you try to do everything right its mind blowing

Probably got contaminated during the colonizing phase since it is near the top of the jars.  I probably shouldn't have check them out so often and maybe handled the tin foil on the tops too much.  Does that seem accurate?

Since I don't have a PC not sure a safe way to get rid of contaminated substrate.  I guess it is not safe to just put them in the trash can like I would if I found a tomato growing mold.

Would it be ok for my health and everyone else if I buried them a few feet deep in the sand on the beach. Any other suggestions on how to get rid of them safely.  Also can I reuse the jars when I try and make my own substrate or should I toss them.  If so how should I sterilize the jars - would clorox disinfectant be ok?

Thanks for all of your helpful feedback.  I realize I have made several rookie mistakes and asking rookie questions.

just put the whole jar in an opaque bag if you don't want to open it and
toss in the trash, there is nothing in it that you wouldn't find in a trash bin.

It's a contam from the air in your house not from outa space
and burrying it in the sand on the beach is just an exhausting form of littering

Put it in a pot and steam it for a while, let it cool down and toss
content in a bag or in a corner of your garden.

Give it a good wash maybe wipe with desinfectant for peace of mind and use
it for future projects.

The main problem is the contams in the jar could be harmful when opened its always advised to sterilize first but at the end of the day its up to you, I personally just go to my back garden empty them in a hole and bury maybe one day they'll grow and I'll have a little out door grow but I'm not hopeful more of an easy way to dispose and a small chance that they could flush one day so I don't feel like I've wasted my time and resources entirely lol
I reuse my jars they ain't cheap in my country just make sure they're clean and sterilize properly when you next fill them
Sterilizing is best in a PC but steaming is fine there's plenty teks on here to do it
You mention foil on top? Before inoculation you should remove the foil and leave it off then stick the jar somewhere with a bit of indirect light where its nice and dry and not too hot
Don't worry about the questions your asking we've all been there, we all learn that way and to your credit your asking questions and following advice most noobs ask questions disagree with the answer then do it their way and get it wrong
