BRF cakes

my first question... can BRF "go bad"
I've had some for about a year, if i wanted to use it will it still contain the nutritional value or should I buy a new bag?

second question
all I have is the fine vermiculite. I recently tried to grow cakes only one colonized but it didn't do too well, so I decided to cut it in half and although the outside was colonized the inside was not so I ran water on the halves and threw them back in the jar to see if it'd colonize.

I am aware that there are several factors that might've contributed to the condition of the cake but what I'd like to know is if there is anything else I can mix in with the substrate that will create bigger spaces for myc to network through?

it'll be fine... it can keep for several years if stored properly...

it works...the course or medium is better and the fine requires a little more incubation time because there is less airspace
