I havent but I know about LC's and all that good stuff. I'm not at that advanced of a level though. I've grown once before a few years back, but it was in-vitro fruiting bags. It was so easy, 1 pound bags colonized in 3 wks and put out 1 oz dry per bag. But the guy isnt around anymore unfortunately.

I didn't realize it was risky putting spores in a 1 pound grain bag though. I thought it was a similar concept to what I was doing before.

Agar is easier than easy mac but doesn't taste nearly as good. It's fun cause it feels advanced but it is really only phase one. Dork out on reading up, try his tek tomorrow and when you spawn that bag in a day or two(flipping ur coin) transfer a few grains to agar.

LC's are not the good stuff :oldman2:

If you want to do this right you need to get into agar!

Fair enough! I've been gone a while and was hoping to just dabble back into the hobby a little bit. I can't find the in-vitro fruiting bags anywhere though, but I'm honestly not surprised. They were so easy to use, that I figured the fuzz would eventually get involved and do something, get them out of business somehow.

But back to this grow, since I'm probably going to have 3 qts of weak spawn, is there an ideal ratio of substrate [coir/verm] I should spawn to? I was going to do a 1:2, but I want to do what's safest, ya know?

I spawned a few hours ago. Crossing my fingers now and hoping I have the touch. I did a little richer than a 1:2 ratio into coir/verm (Damion's bucket tek). The myc wasn't bright white, but it was definitely covering all of the rye, which I'm hoping is good enough. There were no funky smells or anything, it definitely had a myc scent. And then I cased with just enough coir to cover all the grain completely. Put duct tape on all the holes beforehand, and have the tub in a trash bag now, per the tek. Ambient temp right now is 79, and I'm not going to let it get any higher than that. Does it sound like I have a 50/50 shot here?

EDIT: I put a thermometer in the trash bag, and it was a couple degrees hotter (81) which I thought was too high, so I've taken the tub out of it.

Hey guys, just looking for a little input here. I have a dark semi-translucent tub, that allows me to see inside, by shining a flashlight into the side of it. I noticed a couple small spots, where the thin coir layer was a little spotty. So I sterilized the area and myself, and quickly popped the lid off. I'm a little optimistic, because I swear I saw new white fuzzy growth down below, where the spawn is.

Anyway, I quickly covered up these small patches, with coir that was already in the tub (and theoretically pasteurized), but during this quick process, some water droplets from the lid dripped down onto the substrate. It was impossible to prevent, the way I was holding the lid, and now I'm stressing. How likely is it that I did any harm here? The substrate wasn't overly moist to begin with, which I made sure of, so I'm hoping that will work in my favor.

I deleted the pics, I'm a little paranoid haha. They were only of the bags anyway, which I've since spawned with coir/verm in a smallish tub. I didn't take any pics of the inside of the tub yet tho, since I wanted to get the lid right on. Looking inside the tub there isn't much to see yet, still looks like a top layer of just coir/verm, with water condensation covering the walls and lid.

Don't be paranoid, we're all swimming in a sea of mushrooms over here.

but you didn't really chime in though haha, could water droplets dripping down on the sub be harmful on day 2?

Not particularly unless the water droplets happened to harbor contaminants.  If everything's pretty clean then it's not that big of a deal.  A water droplet from a dirty tub falling on a substrate though.. that could cause issues.

Ok thanks, that's kind of encouraging. I did wash the entire tub / lid with dish soap and hot water, and I sprayed it with isopropyl / wiped right before the initial closing.

If it's the first time you've used said tub for growing, and it's fairly new from the store, you probably didn't even need to do that.

You underestimate what can happen between 'Walmart shelf" and "Spawning the Tub".

You've seen things Inocuole....

I've never used it for growing, but I bought it last year, and used it on vacation for random stuff once when I drove down to FL

Eh probably a good idea to wipe it down in such a case.  I'm probably about to completely re-purchase my whole collection of tubs, some of them are old enough that I feel paranoid about them for the fact that I can't actually sterilize them.  Fuckin..  mold myc fragments lodged in there and shit probably.
