This is what you got before that stupid law that made sampling illegal.

A song almost completely comprised of samples used in the popular songs of the day and other pop art clippings, not to steal but as a hommage to all of them. It was considered public property and everybody mashed up everything. In the club, it was a feast of recognition.
Laws killed that.

Copyright is copyright, but that hasn't stopped too many modern artists from sampling as they see fit.

I think the sticking point with the law is someone who did the work of perfecting that drum snare rush. That horn solo. Weeks of sweat and frustration to get everything just right. Just perfect. As James Brown used to do. Weeks! Months! Then someone comes up and uses your hard work as THE beat in their otherwise talent-less track and gets paid off your hard work.

I think that's the Devil's Advocate version of it anyways.

Here's a song about it...sorta...from when JB (and his connections to the mob it's rumored) were threatening Stetsasonic for sampling...

Stesasonic - Talkin All That Jazz

Good album ("8:58") from one of the Orbital guys.

Quote:

8:58 is the debut album of Paul Hartnoll's 8:58 project, released on March 30, 2015. According to Hartnoll, the album is a continuation of his work with Orbital. The album features contributions from actor Cillian Murphy, folk band The Unthanks, singer-songwriter Ed Harcourt, Lisa Knapp, Robert Smith, Lianne Hall and Fable.

The song "Please" is a reworking of the track of the same name from Paul Hartnoll's 2007 solo album, The Ideal Condition, and was previously released under the title "Please (Remember 1992?) (PH Mix)". The track "A Forest" is a cover of The Cure's track of the same name.

Pretty sure the track after "A Forest" has a bunch of The Cure melodies and riffs hidden in it as well. Kinda fun to spot them...

Anyways, here's the first track with Cillian Murphy riffing on the ubiquitous clock like Jello Biafra on quaaludes.

Edit: As per usual for Orbital, none of the tracks really 'stand out' as amazing but it's all in the details. In the title track, @ 4:46(?) I even hear a little, old, Orbital...sampling ...themselves...which song of their's? "The Box"? Something. Ed Hartnoll  is a great guy. Talked about how he just listened to songs he really liked, then recorded himself filling in the off-beats and that would be the beginning of an Orbital song, lol.
