Coir brand question!
#23576417 - 08/25/16 03:17 PM (7 years, 6 months ago) |

So I started with BFR and had multiple successful grows. I recently got into WBS and purchased all the stuff needed and found some coir at a store and I was wondering about brand and if it even matters? The brand I purchased was Plant!t
That is the exact one I have waiting to be used as soon as these WBS are finished. I was planning on going with Damion5050's Coir Tek for my first time around. This coir is one big square and all the pics I've seen are rectangle bricks...do I just cut this square of coir in half and call it 2 bricks then?
Thanks for the help in advance! KB

Yea I use eco earth, but for the most part you just don't want UNCOMPRESSED coir

It says mix, I have been seeing peat/coir bricks popping up at gardening stores, I don't know if it says on the label or not. I use botanicare.

Hmm yeah I didn't notice that "Mix" thing when I bought it...I'll have to check it out when I get home. The dude at the store said it would work for Mushroom cultivation and he knew a lot about edibles so I just took his word for it! I will have to find some botanicare or eco earth if this isn't usable. I'll message back with what I find after I get home from work. Thanks for the quick replies!

No problem. But I did use peat in my substrate as well, just probably diluted down from his sounds like from a mix
My subs for the most part will be 50/25/25 coir, straw, jiffy

I assume you give that a proper pasteurization, sounds interesting, do you feel like you are achieving good results with that sub?

Yes proper pasteurization, and before hand I mix all the core ts with boiling water.
And yes just never got around to an isolate to try it on, but that'll change here shortly

I ran a mini tub of ape using jiffy mix as my sub about a year ago. Performed just as well as coir

So I looked at my Plant!t Brand Coir and the ingredients only say Coco Fibers but nothing else so I'm guessing the "Mix" part is just what they decided to name their product? IDK but I would think they would include whatever else was mixed with it if they had more than just coco coir in it correct? I'll try preparing it this weekend and see how it works out. So if I follow Damion5050's Coir Tek and just cut this big ass square in half and make it into two rectangle pieces that sounds about right?

A brick is usually 650 grams, so judge by whatever that brick weighs. And the coir sounds fine.

I used jiffy because I didn't have hpoo or compost at the time and was actually a good additive imo since I cannot locally get verm. And it has a ton of other shit in it too.
With the compost in my substrate I still add about 5-10% jiffy
