NOOB Question Regarding Colonization
#23577594 - 08/25/16 08:28 PM (7 years, 5 months ago) |

HI everyone,
I have a quick question. I purchased a shroom grow kit and have inoculated the substrate to produce colonies. Here is my question.
One bag is turning nice and white and looking moldy
The other bag looks like it has not colonized. Both bags have been going approx 3 weeks. Can I re-inject the bag with no mold and try to get it going again or will that contaminate the bag?

If it has no sign of growth then there may be a contamination issue already, but that ammount of time should show some sign of contamination if there is any, which would be obvious. Maybe you injected it into the center and you just can't see it. But re injecting won't hurt anything if you don't use to much to throw off the water content.

Thanks for your response. This is a stupid question. How would I know it's contaminated before I re inject the substrate

So you're injecting spores into a substrate with spawn already trying to colonize it?
If it's not colonizing there is a high chance that it's contaminated with bacteria, mold...etc Other indicators include smell and change in color

Spores can take a long time to germinate in some cases. Its also possible that you are growing something in that one already and just can't see it yet because it hasn't grown its way to the outside of the bag where you can see it.

I do apologize about not using the correct terms. I will upload pics tonight when I get home.
I purchased the "easiest mushroom grow kit": http://www.shroomsupply.com/easiest-mushroom-grow-kit-instructions
I injected both bags with a spore syringe and inoculated both bags. My 1st mistake was that I did not have it under a heat mat.
After two weeks of both bags not doing anything, I stuck a heat mat under the bags. One bag of rice is dark green, and turning white all over inside.
The other bag looks like brown rice. No mold, or green or anything. Looks like wet rice.
That was why i wanted to know if I could re-inject the 2nd bag. I have no clue what a contaminated bag looks like.
I have grown cannabis all my life, and got tired of asking friends for shrooms. Took it into my own hands. =)
Thank you everyone for helping me out.

Your first mistake was heaven sent because IF YOU DID put it on a heat mat, THAT would have been mistake #1. Heat pads are no good. Mycelium and shroomies LOVE regular ole room temp. If you are comfortable, then your grow will be too. Can you post some pics because your one bag sounds bad. Green is never good.

Shit turning green is not good. Sounds like what little mycelium managed to develop is trying to escape whatever is contaminating the bag
Don't use heat mats. I did that stupid shit too.

Damn.....i should have trusted my gut. They didnt sell me the heating pad. I use that on my clones for cannabis and thought the heat would be good. Damnit!
Now i know.
Yah bro, the bag is green and white. I thought that was normal as the green was supposed to turn white.
So is it safe to say I fucked up this batch and to buy new substrate? Sorry that I cant include pics as I'm at work reight now.

it's best to inoculate sterilized jars within a day or two. shipping defeats the purpose

It's all good. Yeah, I would start on another run at it. I would STRONGLY encourage you to stay away from kits too. Use your own supplies on your own time, not the crap that comes pre-sterilized in a bag. The teks around here will steer you better and at the same time give you more knowledge on the subject, which is always good.

^This. It may take more money upfront to get the things needed to make your own sterile grain. But its SOOO worth it. You will save money in the long run.

Lurk here like a scrub and learn how to make it your own. Stop buying shit, it's all a marketing gimmick. Be patient and spend a few hours here. Refer to my sig for one of the many TEKs out there and soon enough you'll be growing your own shrooms, a lot of them

for 70$ in the states you can get a pretty large pressure cooker new, and delivered.
the presto 23q. I'm sure you've spent close to 70 on everything and shipping by now. then you'll have the tool you need to make new grows for 5$ from then on out,

Happy Wednesday Everyone,
So I did some reading and I am thinking about doing a pf tek without a pressure cooker.
After watching this video I think I am going this route without using a pressure cooker. I have a couple of questions. After reading the Q&A's, there was one tutorial that was just like this video. Is the tape over the lid necessary?
Also, when steaming the jars with substrate, is it ok to keep a lid on it or does it have to be uncovered?
Also, my syringe of spores is chilling nicely in the fridge since the first debacle. Is that a problem or can they sit there for as long as needed?
Thanks everyone.

The lid is supposed to be on, it cannot be off.
A fridge is fine for spores.

No tape is necessary on pf lids. I'd recommend it during steaming though, just to make sure the jars don't suck up any moisture. Just leave it off after you inoculate.

Its been a while since ive done brf cakes... But isnt it supposed to be a dry verm layer on top, put lid on, and cover in foil for the steaming/pc'ing? I don't see the benefit in MP tape even while steaming.

The only way to get it out is to tear it into pieces which makes it significantly more vulnerable to contaminants. Cakes are meant to be fruited whole.
Could top fruit them I guess by putting the whole jar in the FC..

Hey at least the RX9 is on its way. As for the jars, two weeks is an awfully long time for no growth. Spores can take some time to germinate but I'd take a look at how you're preparing your cakes. Get some wide mouth jars while you're at it

how did you inject them? do those jars have 4 holes? You are supposed to inject and have the needle right at the glass, when growth starts you can clearly see it starting as its right on the side at the glass. But your jar lid is a lot smaller than the jar and I am guessing you did not have the end of the needle touching the glass, but may rather have injected deeper in the mixture -in which case it could be growing on the inside and not yet visible.
Those jars would be OK to use for agar by they way, nice & shallow.

Each jar has four holes but I did not touch the glass. I only went halfway into the substrate. Thank you for that info as I will do that in the future.
As far as agar, what does that mean.
